2007 Mercedes GL-Class News: Official Photos

"Mercedes' biggest off-roader, the G-Class, will finally get a replacement. The current G has been on the market an incredible 25 years. Again and again, it's been updated by adding electronic luxury like power windows, power steering, air conditioning, and even airbags. Inside, the plain ute was updated with wood finishes and leather seats. The most expensive is the current AMG version, which sells surprisingly well these days, in particular in theUnited States.

Now, however, DaimlerChrysler has finally planned to end the current G's career. A replacement will be released at the next Detroit Motor Show in January 2005.

The German automaker will launch at the same time in Detroit two more 4x4 models, the new M-Class and the new R-Class. The latter is a crossover addition to the new M-Class family, aimed at rivals like the Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, and BMW X5.

The new G will go on sale in mid-2006, after the M- and R-Class vehicles: the M-Class and the short-wheelbase R-Class will appear in showrooms in early summer 2005, and the long-wheelbase R-Class will follow in autumn 2005, well ahead of the second generation G.

In order not to disappoint fans of the sturdy 4x4, DaimlerChrysler has developed a special top-of-the-line 4x4 package for the new G model. To meet the expectations of those potential buyers, it will definitely offer a lot more comfort and all the latest high-tech equipment. Power will come from two strong diesels, a 231-hp V-6 and a 300-hp V-8. Two new gas V-8 engines, a 4.6-liter engine with 326 hp and a 408-hp, 5.5-liter V-8 will be available. An AMG version may deliver 460 hp.

The photos are showing latest prototypes during current hot-weather testing in the desert of Death Valley. The computer-detailed image suggests how the new model might look like upon its release."

Looks like they're going the way of GM with the H2.

Wow, another too-big, overpriced, poor-handling, terrible riding, gas guzzling full sized SUV. Yawn, I don't care if it is a Mercedes, I still can't believe people buy these things. The last gen G-class was a true to it's roots SUV, now it's a unibody 7 passenger people mover.

I have to disagree with most of that. I've driven an '03 Navigator and it's more responsive than my grand am. It was enginnered well. Handling is quite good for such a big ute.

You realize that doesn't say a whole lot anymore. No offense to you intended.

I agree with what you are saying, alot of SUV's nowadays are nicer than cars. I dont nessecarily agree with the trend, and I probbably wouldn't buy an SUV, but that's where all the $$ car makers are spending is going... into the marketing and engineering of SUV's.

Sad, isn't it? I mean I could take that SUV around a corner expecting it to have tire squeel and I heard none at all. This was simply a test. Thanks mostly to Jaguar, Ford was able to create a very well engineered SUV.

Yeah, the old G wagon was as about as truck like as you can get. The platform was something like 25 years old. The last gen M-class was also a body on frame. Now the two share platforms and are unibody.

oh i ddint realize it was that old. but i thought unibody was what all suv's were. a truck is not unibody because the cab and bed are separate. the avalanche is unibody because its all one body.. am i wrong?

Sorry, you're wrong. Unibody means that there is no detachable frame from the body. Cars have been built like this for quite a while. Trucks continue to have a frame and separate body because that way is more rigid and strong- more suited to hauling stuff. The only unibody truck is the new Honda Ridgeline. Suv's have recently adapted to unibody construction because it is more cost effective and can be tailored more to a comfortable ride. A few Suv's that are unibody: Honda Pilot/Acura MDX, Lexus RX/Toyota Highlander, Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa fe,Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Chevy Equinox, Nissan Murano, Chrysler Pacifica, BMW X5/X3, Infiniti FX.
Some body on frame Suv's: Chevy Tahoe/Suburban/Trailblazer, Ford Explorer/Expidition/Excursion, Nissan Pathfinder/Armada/Xterra, Infiniti QX, Toyota Sequoia/Land Cruiser/4-Runner, Lexus versions of these, Dodge Durango, any Jeep ever, all the Hummers, Kia Sorrento. There are many more in each category, but you get the point. You might notice that the unibody suv's are sometimes adapted from cars: Honda Pilot/Acura MDX come from the Accord, The CRV is of the Civic platform,Toyota/Lexus come from the Camry, Nissan Murano-Altima, Infiniti FX- 305Z. The frame suv's are the ones you would take off road and haul big loads with. The Avalanche is just a Chevy Suburban with the roof cut off behind the c-pillar.

These are the best pictures yet of the 2006 Mercedes G-Class sport-ute. Following close on the heels of the new 2006 M-Class and 2006 R-Class SUVs, the second-generation G is expected to debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Unlike the current G-Class that has been around for decades wearing a hard-edged, military-inspired look, the next-generation model goes in a completely different direction that will place it more in line with other full-size luxury SUVs in terms of packaging and comfort.

Built on the same chassis as the M- and R-Class vehicles, the G will most likely feature a fully independent air suspension in place of the current model's straight axle setup to give it much improved on road ride and handling characteristics. For those who want to preserve the G's heritage as a fully capable backcountry machine, an off-road package will be offered that will add low-range gearing and locking differentials among other things.

Powertrain options haven't been revealed, but a variation on the 5.0-liter V8 used in the M- and R-Class SUVs is the most likely scenario along with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Interior comfort will be this G's biggest upgrade as the current model suffers from a decades-old design that places utility above ergonomics. A more natural driving position, improved interior materials and three rows of seats should make this G-Class better suited for the kind of urban family hauling it's most likely to see.

Production is expected to start toward the end of this year at Mercedes' plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with sales starting early next year.
