ENgine Oil HELP!!!!

Am I checking my oil my oil right? I start it , run it, stop it, pull the dipstick out, and its covered. Clean the thing off, put it back in, and I have almost no oil on it. Car is running fine. Oil pressure gauge shorted out a month ago... HELP!

You'll want to give it a few minutes (I'd say like 5-7) to let the oil drip back into the oil pan before checking it...

Your probably low there buddy. Pulling the dip wipe it then checking the oil again is the right way. Check all your gaskets Especially lower intake!!! Then check oil pan, drain plug and filter make sure they're all tight. Usually when you pull it after it is warm, car off, and there's Absolutley No oil on the dip then your at least 2 1/2 qts low. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Im attaching a pic that I took yesterday while I installed some new plugs. It seems that my rear cam cover is leaking oil. I think its a cam cover. It had oil on the seam, and on hte back too. It seems like it comes out, only while under pressure (when the car is on). Ive put 3 qts in so far! Ill be taking the car to a gm garage monday, and itll be sitting in the garage till then. I dont know how to check those gaskets, so im screwed. Thanks for the help. If you know any 2.4 experts, PLEASE ask them to check out the pic.

Are you letting the oil settle back down like Brendon mentioned?

You should not check oil right after turning off the engine.

Ya, and even with about 2 quarts added, its still showing that i need another quart... Im thinking theres a gasket in that cam cover that has a crack or something.

Yeah thats them allright what did you take off the ignitionmodule/engine cover. Those 2.4 s are strange. Was there alot of oil resting in there cause from that pic it looks pretty dry from where I'm sitting. To leak out all that oil it might be coming from somewhere else. Look underneath see if there is like oil all over the bottom of the engine. I hope your not burning it

If you see the second pic, there is more oil beneath where my oil pr es guage sender is. Its not coming from the sender though. There is fresh oil that seems to have dripped onto one of those large rubber lines under there, although I cant locate a specific location. And no, there wasnt any oil pooled in the area of the cam covers. There also wasnt any in or near the plugs. It just seems like this has happened real slow, when the system is pressurized. Luckily for me, my pres gauge shorted, then this prolly started so i didnt know! Also, I lost my job a week ago. Since then, ive discovered I need a new waterpump, now this. I also have to pay for next semester soon... Im gonna pull my hair out! None of the service depts around here are open till 730 monday morning. Ill try and get her in then. Not to the pontiac place here (hate em) , but to out local chevy dealership. Keep your fingers crossed for me, cause im scared ****les!

This is really screwed up. Im not burning it (had my dad follow me around today looking for smoke...), not leaking it (no puddles, drips, nothing). Yet, im low. I filled it this morning, and drove quite a bit today seeing if i could make it lose some. No joy. Im just as full as I was when I filled her up this morning. Im perplexed...

How about the last time you got an oil change? Did you do it your self or did some grease monkey not put enough oil in?????

Thanks again for the tips guys. My uncle works at a mercury dealership in holland (hour south). He's gonna drive it down tomorrow when he goes to work, and have the techs check it out. That way, he can keep an eye on it for me, and make sure the job gets done right. I figured it was just a gasket inthe cam cover. And, the last oil change wasnt done by me, but I bring my guy (ive made friends with him, he likes to talk cars) my 4 quarts of oil (mobil 1 of course) and watch him do everything. I usually help quite a bit (gets me a cheaper oil change). So, i know that was done right. Either way, itll get taken care of this week. Itll be checked tuesday, and worked on after that. I know i need a new waterpump. That job requires dropping the engine, so, theyll definitely be able to check for leaks then.

Yeah not positive but I think water pumps are a B!tch to do on those 2.4's. But anyway when you find out and fix it post up cause I'm interested in knowing what it was.

It funny because the pump is only 70 bucks but the labor could be as much as 500 bucks. When my pump does go out. Which will be soon. (they go like clockwork at about 60-65g miles) I will be putting in new cams and changing the timing belt since you will be in there anyway.
