Opinions on head units: What do you guys think?

Like the title says, I'm going to start piecing together a fairly modest SQ system in the Z. Probably doing MB Quart components in the front and rear, JL10W7 in the back, still deciding on amp and what not, Alpine 6.5" screen in the cubby hole above the head unit, just still deciding on a head unit.

The screen will be hooked up to my Xbox, so I don't necissarily need a head unit that plays DVD's, but it might be cool to have the versatility of having visualization while playing cd's and what not.

So, here are the options, and feel free to add your own ideas. My criterion are as follows: Double din, matches stock guage color (amber/orange/red), decent SQ, decent look, pre-amp outs for front rear and sub, at least one audio input.

Sony WX-7700 MDX - Only offered in Japan, pretty sweet looking double din head unit. Only downside is the fact that it isn't the best for SQ in the world, and Sony mobile is nothing to be desired for, but meh, it looks hawt, and contrasts the interior light colors very well as well as the interior lines.

Alpine MDA-W988J - Again, only offered in Japan iirc. More versatility to work with Alpine components (nav, touch screen), better quality all around. Colors don't match interior at all, price tag is higher.

Nakamichi MD-95z - By far the pinnacle of sound quality and build quality, probably one of the best head unit makers in the market. Colors are fully adjustable to match the stock guages. 6-cd in-dash changer. Huge focking price tag for a simple head unit (doesn't look too flashy), but sound quality would be well worth it.

I'm really leaning towards that Sony...it can be had on Ebay for ~$500 brand new. I would greatly appreciate anyone's ideas on the matter. :help: Thanks for honest opinions

I looked at the Kenwood, but I really want to put the screen in the cubby hole, where NAV usually goes. That and I am eying the 1000.1 to power the system.

That and you don't have gold stickers and black "RACING" steelies

sony and kenwood = teh suck

I'd go with the nak or the alpine...and a 1000.1 is a tad much for a 10w7 though IMO I wouldnt go more than a 500.1

The sony looks nice at night, but I would go with the alpine. Is there a reason you are looking at only HU that are from japan? Is it to get the double din?

The Eclipse double din is an in-dash screen, not what I'm looking for. I want a regular double din head unit and the Alpine 6.5" to throw in the cubby hole.

Yep, there aren't too many american model double-din's that I'm a fan of. Besides, it'll be somewhat original.

I think the sony looks the best and like you said matches the interior well. Never heard a nak before but have heard many decent alpines

opinion: sony and kenwood decks are built crappy and are no good. Pioneer, eclipse, and alpine have the top dog in head units. If you want you could get a single DIN and a equlizer below it (digital too). Pioneer makes both and I love pioneer anyways.

pioneer better than kenwood?? not hardly, but i guess that's your opinion pioneer makes some good high end stuff, but it's usually a tad overpriced.

the sony looks better, but i'd go with the alpine or nakamichi. if you're wanting sound quality who cares what it looks like. plus the nakamichi would be more of a deterent for thieves. and i think the 1000.1 would be right at home with that sub. definately make it's presence known in that little car
