Don't bother going to level one for the tranny. They don't make any performance parts for our trans and they don't know how to modify GM fwd trannies. Several people on the grand prix boards have had issues with them. If you don't plan on boosting over 6-8psi though the tranny can take it. More than that and the clutch packs start slipping.

Currently you can only get one SC and it's very expensive. For less than that you could get a good turbo system made, which would also allow you to run more boost, and basically have a little higher power potential if you pick the right turbine. Use the money you save buying the turbo instead of the SC to fix up the trans so it will put the extra power to the ground.

Oh yeah, and this topics been covered a million times x10... use the search button.

If you do go with forced induction, unless you plan on making a race-only car pushing 15+ pounds of boost with forged internals and such, you should probably go with a supercharger. Turbo lag is extremely uncool, especially in autocross or tight road courses. Just my opinion, though.

actually, in hindsight, i say save your money period and don't waste it on cars. Instead, use the money you gain from your investments to buy sweet cars. But if you can't do that...at least make sure you build the baddest turbo setup you can afford...

it fills 'er up quite nicely, however i have not seen it in there since July of 2003 when i pulled the motor due to a cracked piston. i finally have everything almost all put back together. with ported heads, .040" bored over block, 8:1 Forged Pistons, cam regrind, align honed block, ARP conrod bolts, and a few other things...I could drop it in my car next weekend if I had my tranny. Still waiting on that piece from Domestic Performance, along with the Limited Slip and torque converter too...this thing should rip pretty hard.

Bob, it was a joke. Sometimes my blatent sarcasm doesn't go over so well on the 'net, no malice was intended. If anybodies serious about going fast, the GA is a complete waste of money. Project 455 (1979 TA w/ bigblock power) is going to by my winter work, and for the $2500 the car cost me, its already faster than my GA could be with triple the investment. What it would cost to make the GA run mid thirteens is what it'll take to get this car in the 10-11 second range. But, some folks will wanna do the quick GA thing. I'll be stopping at headers, boost is too much $$ to hp for me.

It's interesting to see the bloodbath that occurs when someone asks a simple question. I don't quite get the pattern of attitutes which leads to all out bashing someones intelligence for sake of posting. True, some folks could use the search functionality of this forum a bit more, however, for the repetitive questions:

It would be very nice to see something similar what brad has done at 60° V6. Post articles. This is especially focused on those that bash the intelligence of the common thread participant, and know everything.

Myself, I am just a simply geek whom works prefessionally on systems architecture, and play around with my 3400 because I like the challenge. I am not a professional mechanic, or ASE certified, etc. Perhaps some folks should evaluate why they joined this forum. If it is for some godly bragging rights, then I'm truely sorry (this forum must really suck for you). If you are here to share knowledge, I share your excitement in all the possibilities...

That's a **** comment....that would be like me giving crap to everyone here who doesn't have a brand new house like I do. I would never throw that in anyones face....or say they are dumb for not having one.

But anyway, boost is pricey on a GA.....and a new tranny costs ya even more.
Might want to re-think it.

...I'm glad you found enough information in my previous post to come such a conclusion, and I'm elated to see that you took the time to add your intuitive, informative diagnosis of my intelligence.

The reason I would suggest a supercharger is because I assume he is going to be driving his car quite often, as most people don't buy a Grand Am when they want to spend $20,000 on a weekend racer. I think that superchargers are more reliable and simpler in design, and they are linear in boost, so that if you're at 2000 RPM, you will likely always produce the same amount of boost each time you you get to 2000 RPM, as opposed to the delay associated with the spooling of a turbo. Turbo's work off of your exhaust gasses, using their force to turn a compressor to force air into your engine, therefore more exhaust pressure is needed to increase boost. A supercharger runs off of your accessory drive belt, meaning it will always spin at the same rate as compared to the relative RPM of the engine. Though most superchargers can't produce more than 15-20 psi, that is more than enough to destroy any naturally aspirated GM V6 without major work to the internals of the engine. I assume that GM uses superchargers in their cars for a reason.

i do it because its fun personally.

no matter what car i have, it will be modded in some way.

its all for the fun of it.

some people need to rethink why they started modding in the first place and see the real enjoyment.
