Question considering getting a grand am want a 14 sec car though...

I am considering getting a newer 99+ grand am. My fiance has one and i like the way they look but as with any car I own I will want to mod it... I don't know if anyone else has read the article in High Performance Pontiac, but they say that with cold air intake, SLP exhaust and minimal weight reduction they ran 15.0 flat on a good day in the high 50's I was thinking that with those same mods and and underdrive pulley and more weight reduction I could have a car that can (theoritically) run in the 14's but after searching around on the forum it doesn't seem to be the case... anyhoo, I'm not gonna spend upwards of $10,000 on a car and mods if I can't get in into the 14's, I'll just keep modding fieros (no bashing) and have a car that will get there for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost... any info is appricieated, as I would really like to have a newer car to work on and I am somewhat familiar with the 60 degree v6 engines... thanks again

There are quite a few members on here who have their GA's well into the 14's without $10,000 worth of mods. I'm sure they'll chime in soon enough.

i ran a 15.6 all stock, early last summer

There is a lot of GA that have gone 15.3 stock. If you get CAI, Headers, Exhuast, and a PCM 14s are attainable. You will have a better shot with some heads and ported UIM/LIM since the top end on the GA sucks because of valve float.

With some weight reduction it helps quite a bit, if you have leather, and a sunroof the car will weigh more than if it didn't. I ran a good 300lbs heavier than a some other peeps here *Joe*cough If you can get the vehicle weight down to 3000 lbs with you in it, it will be slightly quicker than most

14s isn't really that fast. 14 flat, yes, 14.6-14.9, no.

^^^ The man has a point, but if you want it into the 14s regaurdless if its high or low 14s you don't have to use forced induction or spend a ton of money.

I dont think he meant spend $10,000 on mods, he meant ten grand on a car and mods total to run 14s.

Ahh yup, I just reread his post...can still get into the 14's though without a crazy amount of money invested.

You can pick up a low mileage 99 (for the age, 75k is low mileage) for 6k and that leaves you 4k to play with on it

Yea, like somebody else said, headers ($900 by the time you install them w/ downpipe and highflow cat), SLP exhaust ($450 shipped, or less), CAI ($150), and a DHP PCM ($215) and you should see under 15.0 on most GA's. So for around $1700 you should be able to hit in the 14's. Like somebody else said, head work goes a long way with the other mods listed. So you find a GA with 50k on it for $6,000 and you've got plenty of money to do all kinds of work and be in the mid 14's.

If you really don't care for looks you might want to get a 97-03 used Grand Prix GTP to hit 14's or faster. My friend ran 14.8 with just an intake. But I think a lot of people here will agree with you that Grand AM is a better looking car.

buy a GTP! nough said!

I have a mid-high 14 second Grand Am.... and a stock GTP.

this GTP is looking nicer everyday!

he GTP has much better low end than the GAGT... but the GAGT is better up top.... thanks to tons of money in mods!

next week the GTP will be running circles around the GAGT... and for only 1k in mods!

Yea, factory freak! Headers are needed to get most N-bodies into 14's all motor.
