Detriot Downsizing

GM and Ford are shedding market share and slashing production. Their new cars are underachieving. Their supplier spinoffs are teetering. Detroit appears destined for a smaller place in the auto universe.

This was to be a year of rebirth for Detroit's Big 2. But that's not what happened. General Motors and Ford Motor Co. have reached a tipping point. Incentives aren't working, new cars aren't generating excitement, and America's automakers are whacking production. The Big 2 are getting smaller.

Not much of a suprise here

GM stock has fallen more than 11% of it's total value today as of 2:30 pm, this is a big problem!

yeah, like I didn't see this comming. You see, ford and GM are releasing stuff that would have been great 4-5 years ago. right now, it's not cutting it. for example, we'll use engine power. although not the only reason why someone would buy a vehicle, it certainly is a factor (as far as i'm concerned). Nissan's venerable 3.5l v6 can push 270 horses, stock. gm's most powerfull n/a v6 (the new 3.9) is at a mere 240. go figure.

also, when other manufacturers are making leaps in terms of styling (scion anyone?), Ford and GM are staying conservative. being outrageous is a risk, sure, but you have to take some if your business is going anywhere.

Actually, this year they upped it to 287hp, still ~30 mpg

Nope, the 3.6 in the CTS, STS, and SRX puts out 260 (this could be better as well) with it's modern design (DOHC, VVT, Aluminum). Unfortunately GM thinks that only vehicles that sticker at $35,000 plus deserve the competitive powertrains. Transmissions follow the same path, Cadillac gets the 5 speeds while every other division keeps 4 speeders. The funny thing about that is that even a 5 speed auto is not class leading in the cars GM puts it in. GM needs to do make a Nissan like decision to put it's best engines in every car regardless of price!

PS. the Nissan VQ puts out 300 HP in a special edition 350Z this year and 298 in the G35 sport versions. Thats impressive!

Actually it sucks because of the four or five good cars they produce, but funny for everything else.

(about the engines) yes, very well put. Nissan doesn't care about having up level cars having the same engine as cheaper cars. They give the maxima, 350z, murano, fx series, and the g35s the same engine. why doesn't gm follow suit? nobody knows.

If it werent for caddy and the vette where would GM be? Probably bankrupt by now. It seems GM and Ford are concentrating more on their SUV/Truck line up.

What... they sell Vette's and Caddy's like hotcakes or something?

More like.... where would GM be without their best selling Aveo (as wierd as that sounds)

I dont think however Gm/Ford will go bankrupt, They employ to many people here in the states for the Goverment to let that happen. I think it will be more of what happen to chrysler/dodge, Who know's maybe Toyota/Honda will by them out? Never know.

The only thing holding the U.S. auto manufacturers back is uber-conserative styling, and unions.

The only way they'll ever be successful is if they move manufacturing out of this country.
