2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX

Quote:
Mitsubishi rolled out the 2006 Evolution (number IX, if you're counting, but don't look for that logo on the car). The new Evo gets some exterior mods to improve engine cooling and reduce wind resistance, but the main change is underhood where the turbocharged 2.0-liter four gets variable valve timing that boosts output to 286 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque.

Yummy. Glad they didn't go nuts on revisions to the look. Not sure if I'm nuts on the fog lamp openings (if that's even what they are) but overall it still looks good... plus looks are not really what the car is about.

Interesting that they went to variable valve timing. I'm curious to see dyno charts comparing stock EVO 8 vs 9. I'm sure the torque curve has changed for the better... cause gaining 10 HP & 3 lb-ft really doesn't tell you much.

Why in order to go fast do you have to look like a complete idiot in this car? Build me one without the overdone spoiler, gaping front fascia, and useless hood scoop. Then it will be the ultimate sleeper. Variable valve timing only gets you 10 horsepower? They should talk to Honda about that one.

*thunder heard in the background*
the spoiler helps maintain stability at high speeds
the gaping front fascia allows air to hit the intercooler which helps
and the useful hood scoop allows heat to escape the engine bay that the turbo generates
and doesnt this lancer use vtec technology too? i read that somewhere...

and how would it be the ultimate sleeper without the appearance stuff? they make an MR version that isnt fooling anybody - the brakes gives it away, and the lines on the body that are absent on the base model is a tell tale sign as well...

It helps to research or at least read the thread before you post something negative.
1. The spoiler is an option... aka you don't have to get it.
2. The hood vent is directly above the turbo. There is a anti-rain piece that can be removed leaving a wide open (but with slats) vent to allow hot air to evacuate the turbo area under the hood. Perfect for track events.
3. It was never ever meant to be a sleeper.
4. The purpose of variable valve timing is to allow more slightly more aggressive valve timing to occur at high RPM, all while maintaining and improving low-RPM output. As I said in my post... that 10 HP numerical figure doesn't mean much, but dyno charts would show a flatter torque curve and more power across the entire RPM range. They could have certainly went with a more aggressive cam instead yielding more than 10 HP at peak... but the rest of the powerband suffers badly.

I think they are making it more like the MR edition, at least I read that somewhere.

Im gonna be another one to pick on you you pontiac neon-driver

1. Spoiler is function....AWD you idiot!
2. Gaping front fasica....you see the intercooler dont you? nuff said
3. Hood Scoop is actually heat extractor...who wants to trap all that damn hot air the turbo creates under the hood
4. Better power curve you idiot
5. Never meant to be a sleeper you dumbass

and i think it looks good other than the ghetto foglight holes

What are they taking ram air design hints from pontiac? Dont they know its a gimmick and it doesnt add any power?

Hmm, maybe the turbo helps a little.

Starting to

Don't get the whole "does a spoiler actually help" arguement going, please. We all know that 90% of the people that drive this car will not gain anything from that spoiler, AWD or not.
