$300 a steal for a foxbody Mustang GT?

My co-worker decided to sell his probject car, an 88 or 89 (cant remember the exact year) Mustang GT 5.0 5/spd. He said it was running smooth until just recently. Said he had his mechanic cousin check it out and that there is something wrong with the ECU and wiring. His cousin told him itd only be a couple hundred bux to fix, but I guess my coworker doesnt wanna bother with it since he just bought a streetbike. He said he'd give it to me for $300. Body is clean, has headers and exhaust, newer tires. You guys think I should pick it up as a project? I know there are a couple of ya'all here on the boards that know their sh1t about foxbodies. does it sound like too much of a hassle to deal with since there are ECU and wiring probs? id prolly just throw it by the garage and let it sit until later down the road when i have some extra $$$. my dad thinks itd just be a waste of cash since id have to pay for non-operable registration fees. Ever since I saw two foxbodies running 10s, I've wanted one!

thanks guys

If ECU and wiring is all that's wrong with it... I'd definitely do it. Even if there's a couple other things wrong with it, should be too much to fix it up real nice.

id do it. that car will pay itself off in the longrun. the old 5.0 with a 5/spd, wow, not much more can be said. that car has alot of potential, and $300 makes it a deal that cant be passed up. go for it!

I wish I was where you are, cause I'd scoop that car up quick. I'll be doing exactly that after the 1st of the year anyway, but 300 is a hell of a deal. The motor alone is worth that. The tranny is worth that. Even if you wanted to make a few bucks and sell the motor and tranny alone, and sell a rolling chassis it would be worth more than that. You can find mustang parts cheap and have a real nice running car. My first love will always be a Mustang so maybe I'm just partial.

Do it. If its a 89, which it better be, it has MAS air and that ECU is approx $100 used. Only thing is, that transmission sucks when you get some good power going thru it, so you cant really powershift.

It's a great deal, but I wouldn't buy anything that old.

ok well i talked to my coworker again. he said he got "mixed up" about the car and its actually an 86 convertible with the 5.0. he said he got it confused with the 89 his dad has. my coworker isnt all there, so im not too surprised he got them mixed up. anyways, he said that it'll drive around but will just randomly shut off while cruising. im a bit disappointed since i just read that the 86 had poor head design and i personally like the 87-93 exterior a bit more. i dunno, still a good buy?

Who cares about the head design. Its a carbb'ed motor, and its a toy. The stalling issue could easilly be fixed. Getting parts for these cars are much cheaper/easier then the grand am/civic are.

the main difference is the front end, which you can change to the 87-93 style easily, same body, all bolts up!

No, there is a differance in the motor. I cant remember if the heads are differant, or the pistons dont have any reliefs. I believe its the pistons not having reliefs.

You could buy the car for $300, build a motor and still come out on top with a fast car.
