Sony XPlod...
So, I'm looking to upgrade to a real system on a budget, so I figured what better way to go then Sony XPlod. They sound good, are very reasonably priced, and look very nice. Well, I'm not talking about the ones down at Wally-World, I'm talking about those nice satin silver 'Specialty' series.
Anyway, I was wandering if any of you have ever had any experience with these speakers/head units/subs/amps as I plan to overhaul my audio to ALL Sony XPlod. Anyone??? I appreciate any and all answers, ~Ryan PS. I enclosed an image of what I would like my car to look like next year. Now it is totally stock, minus huge dent in LR fender. you can find a better HU than sony for less than what you will pay for a sony...they are CRAP
their HU's suck, the speakers are alright, the amps overheat, and their subs sound cheap..just to answer all of your questions...you wonder why they carry all this AT Wal-Mart? ALSO: please don't do that to your car (pic you attached).... ![]() Last edited by blake; 10-03-2005 at 09:55 AM. |

sorry to tell you guys this, but i heard some sony xplod subs a few weeks ago, powered by xplod amp and somethin hidden (never found out what), up in michigan and they were dead even with some JL Audio subs, i want to say w3 not sure tho. xplod is a decent system compared to most things on the market. plus this kid is 17, you have no idea what his budget is, and sony might be the best system he can afford for his budget. yes its not the best out there, but it is still fairly decent in comparison to other crap on the market.
my recommendation is to go with what you like, if you like sony then go with it. these guys are posting personal opinions, and seeing as ive been running two 12" sony xplods for two years now, i can say they are a decent sub. yes i am upgrading soon, but i have been happy for the last two years and have gotten loads of compliments on my subs. no they are not the best for competitions, but they are definitely good for everyday listening imo. just a word of advice, buy online through a good ebay retailer or another site (good ebay meaning thousands of positive feebacks). you can pay alot closer to factory pricing if you buy online than if you go to your local circuit city or best buy. |

I have a sony amp enclosed and it doesnt overheat at all. I had a sony head unit and it was garbage. You get what you pay for. Get the best you can afford. Remember crappy subs with supposed high wattage wont be nearly as loud as better subs, even with a much lower rating. Sony lies abou their wattage. Dont believe it. I imagine a lot of other companies do to. Id avoid going all of one brand. No one company is good at everything. I have a panasonic head unit. They make great headunits. I could afford rockford subs, which are okay. I built my own box, which works better than any one youd buy, and it cost 30 bucks to make. You can get some great deals on head units online. Find some refurbs. Ive personally had great luck with them and theyre really cheap.

If I wasn't going with a 3 way front stage, I'd be using my sony xplode amp and it was made in 02. It was even rated higher than a comparable mcintosh amp, although it was just a ca&e mag review.
Although the current sony products have earned a rep of poor reliabilty, I would put most of the blame on the massive increase in availability of their products and misuse. With that said, I would go with pioneer. I've used sony, alpine, pioneer, RF, denon, clarion, and nak decks. Pioneer is the only one that I didn't have an issue with. |

Do not get the Sony Xplode. It screams "I know nothing about car audio!"
If you want a good HU get an Alpine, and if you want some nice speakers look at Klipsch or Polk. Again Sony XPlode's are complete and utter garbage. Not only that, but you get raped in the ass because you are paying more for the Sony name.

I'll have to agree with the HU's and subs comments but I have a Sony amp and it gets along fine with my alpines, no problems in the almost 2 years I've owned it.

ive never listened to anything other than sony subs, but i can say again that their subs are good for the price (factory pricing, not store pricing). ive been on a pioneer hu for 3 years now, no problems. infinity makes good equipment imo, something to look into.
on my current system i made a point of showing that alot of "crap" merchandise is the exact opposite of what most people say. i have gotten loads of compliments from friends who havent even seen what i am running. i have a combo of pioneer, pyramid, legacy, and sony. not "top of the line" by any means, but it gets the job done and sounds good to me. you can go with competition pieces that will cost you $$$$$$ or whatever does it for you, even if it is cheap by some people's standards. if you want sony, go with sony. they arent the worst out there by any means, but they arent the best either. but if its what you want, i would say its good for the price as long as you get it through a reputable online retailer. |

Sony is not worthless, but it is fairly crappy. You can get some Pioneer stuff for around the same price that will sound much better.
As stated above, buy the best you can afford.

Alright so insted of us giving this kid crap lets find out exactly what her budget is? It is true that Sony HU are garbage, I had one it lasted for about 8 months and crapped out on me so go get a Pioneer for about the same price. Pioneers are not that much more expensive if not the same price as Sony around here.

So some of you are dissing on Sony, yet plugging Pionier... Yet they are both on the same speaker wall at Wal-Mart =\ So, You guys say that Alpine is an option for the same price range of my Sony head ($200) what is the model number/price/retailer I could find it??? One of my good friends told me that I should invest in some Polk subs and speakers as well. Can anyone suggest anything within this brand??? Would any of you suggest shopping at Circuit City instead??? One more thing... I don't know JACK about car audio. I'm new to modifying cars too. So if any of you could just lead me in the right direction for a budget system, I'd be more than happy. Thank you all for the responses, buth good and bad, ~Ryan Last edited by hallows-eve; 03-13-2006 at 10:14 AM. |

I got my head unit for 150 bucks. Retails for 400. Refurb.
Yes everything walmart sells is crap. Their about low prices, not quality. Getting a complete system of one brand says you really love that brand. If you have a mix, it means its a work in progress. I can say, yeah, ive got a sony amp, but some day it will be replaced, then maybe the subs, etc... |

How would this sound?....
Alpine head unit (CDA-9847) with Polk Audio speakers (db690 & db525) and Kicker amp and sub??? By the way, how do you corrolate wattages? is something supposed to match up, or is the head supposed to have more watts than the speakers? or the amp have more than everything??? Again, I'm new and lost. Still Searching, ~Ryan Last edited by hallows-eve; 03-13-2006 at 10:15 AM. |

if your asking me i am not a big alpine fan, and i really dont like polk either. not even there momo. i run kicker amps and there not bad. infinity kappa or perfect is the way to go on a budget if you ask me.
i am not sure about your question. most head units put out 50 watts per speaker. and most speakers have about that for an rms. an amp is suppost to put more wattage to the speakers and give you more control over what kind of sound you want to have to going your fronts and rears. most amps have filters for both highs and lows, i know kickers do, and most have a bass boost. i hope that helps |

you should definitely look around your area for some audio specialty shops, or even online, you will find much better deals on much better stuff. most places like this also have sound rooms to test subs and amps of all brands
for my first setup i used the factory deck, kicker 400.1 amp and 3 jl audio 10w0s. i think it ran me around 700ish bucks (box included). absolutely loved that system, couldnt have asked for more out of my first setup and the price remember you will also need wiring, instalation labor if you dont know anyone, ect. so you may want to consider saving up just a little more to make sure you get good stuff the first time out, you dont want to be replacing things all the time
