Gauging Interest: 1999 Grand Am SE

Edit: I'm still trying to sell this, and I'd love to find a happy home for it all modded up. Shoot me some PMs. The potential part out list is at the bottom of this thread if I end up going that route.

I'm just doing a little prospecting right now, but I'm considering selling the Grand Am. 114,000 miles, 90% of those highway. I'm the second owner, bought the car 2.5years ago with 44,000 miles. Since then, all maintenece has been done on a regular basis, oil every 3,000 miles, fuel filter every 30,000 miles, tranny flush at 52,000 miles and again at 108,000 miles. Brakes are fresh, both front wheelbearing replaced around 100,000 miles. LIM was replaced this spring. New battery this week. Basically, I'm pretty anal about taking care of it.

Mods: Doctor Speed Cold Air Intake, TOG headers, SLP catback exhaust with a cutout, DHP PCM. Also, the car has a two gauge pod with volts in one, and the other is an Aerofoce interceptor which will read all parameters off the computer, as well as reset trouble codes, and record parameters for review later. I have Angel Eye fogs with blue leds and fresh fog bulbs. The car has Eagle 192 17" rims, tires are fairly worn. For winter I have the stock 15 spoke SE wheels, with good rubber on them. I also have snowtires for 2 of the 16" stock wheels. The car also has an aftermarket, power sunroof, installed professionally, before I bought the car.

Problems. None. Yea, right, what car is perfect? There is a small rust bubble on the front of the hood, above the passengers side headlight. Pretty small, would sand and repaint pretty easy. Same problem on the drivers side back door, bottom cornor has a little rust spot. The body is in good shape other than that. The stock 15 spoke 16" wheels are a little rough, straight, but the paint is peeling in a couple spots.

Other than that, she's in real good shape. The interior is good, never been roughed up much, not smoked in. I'd consider parting out, but I'm interested to see if somebody is interested in the whole car as is. Kelly Blue Book put the private party value at $4,425. I think $5,000 with all the mods would be a starting place for me. Probably go $4,000 put back to stock. Anybody interested.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate that. You seem like a pretty insightful and knowledgable guy, you're probably right on with the price. Congratulations on being the first to think I'm asking way too much, I knew it wouldn't take long, but I was expecting Bob or Vintalage to get the party started. *sarcasm off*

For anybody thats actually interested, $5,000 is a starting point, not a fixed idea. We can work around what mods you do or don't want, etc. And, 115,000 miles isn't that many when they've all been put on in 5-10 hour trips. Hours are what wears out a car, not miles. 70 miles on the highway in an hour vs. 30 in the city in a hours time, which do you think put more wear?

If someone offers you $3500 jump on it thats about a fair price but honestly if its paid off you're better just keeping it as a second car

100K plus miles is a lot of miles, whether it's city or highway. I bought my car new in 1998 and I have nearly 68k miles. I think the KBB value was about $4800. Mods don't increase the value of a car. With your mileage, I feel $3500-$4000 is a fair price. If I dispose of the GA next year, I am going to de-mod and trade it in toward a new car.

De-modding is probably the best bet... take like 3800 for the car, and piecemeal the mods away for maybe another grand. Ehh, driving it into the ground might work out too.

There comes a point where you hit bottom dollar price and it won't go lower. I think you are near that. Even though it's age and mileage are high, a vehicle is still worth a solid chunk of change related to other things in the world. IMO unless a car is mangled or burnt, I can't believe some that I see selling for $500-$1500. For crissakes, my TV at home is worth more than a mechanically engineered, moving parts, vehicle??. ya know what I am saying?

So, with that said, I think $4000 with mods would be accurate. If the person bought the car to never even drive it, but to part it out, I bet they could still get back all their money or even more!! This is why I don't understand a lot of cars I see on the side of the road going for less than $2000

You ought to see what a car like this goes for at the auction. Its sad. I could probably buy an 02-03 GAGT with 50k miles at the auction for what I can sell this one for privately. Defintely considering that too. This thread, after all, was just a gauging interest, which there is little, and not for cheap, neither of which fact surprises me.

It really is sad how cheap people end up selling cars for. Although, I did get $600 for a 1990 Buick Century with over 200k on the clock. Little rust, but ran well. I still see it around, and that was 5+ years ago.

I wouldn't sell it unless it was going to net you close to what you put in to it. Like $1500 less. I know it's not really feasible but why sell it for basically nothing? It'll be a huge loss and how far is the money you get for the GA going to go towards a new car?

you've got a grand worth of mods on the car....easy. I paid $5800 for my 99 GAGT with 67k miles and a couple dings. If you're going for a profit, i'd sell some of the mods, then sell the car.

I agree completely with this except for the part about the $1000 worth of mods. I did a quick little estimation in my head with the mods listed, and I came up with about $2500 give or take a little. I have a '99 with 84k miles on it. It doesn't matter that it's 7 years old. It matters that it's still in emaculate condition. Same goes for his car. I'd rather have a 7 year old car that has been tediously cared for than a one-year old car that has been treated like a piece of cow dung.

Modding a car only drops the value to a dealer, but not all that much to a private party buyer such as the ones in this forum who are actually looking for these aftermarket goodies. The best way to always go about selling a modded car is to return it back to stock, sell all the aftermarket stuff separately, and then try to trade the car in or go private party. With a trade-in to a dealer, you would be looking at about $2000-2500 IMO. Private party, $4000 with or without the mods is fair. But, $4000 without the mods and then getting the extra cash for parting out is a hell of a lot better than $2000 from a dealer.

Ok, I thought I had this baby sold, then the buyer fell apart on money. So, this thread is back, and the car is still forsale. I might just part out too. Probably something like this:

SLP Catback - $300 + stock exhaust

Dr. Speed Cold Air Intake w/ K&N - $100

17" Eagle 192's - $400

TOG Headers - $350 BUT you pull 'em and make sure stock manifolds get put on right.

Gray Gauge pod with Voltage and Aeroforce Interceptor Scan Gauge - $250

Angel Eye Fogs w/ Blue LEDs - $40

GTO Headlight Covers - $15

I'd much rather sell the car whole, so make some offers. Also, if you're really interested in a part, let me know and we'll see what we can work out. Still gauging interested and probing for a buyer on the whole thing at this point, but parting it out may be a viable option soon enough. Going up forsale locally as well.

I think its pretty damn sad how bad these cars lose money on their resell value but I believe what you're doing about selling the mods is what will bring in a nice chunk of change before selling the whole car.

P.S.,

The GTO headlight covers are carbon fiber I'm assuming? Not the smoke black ones? Got any pics of them? Thanks
