4 8" Subs v/s 12" sub

Hi,

Just want to know if 4 8" subs at 100Wrms each would play louder and just as low as 1 12" at 400rms.

I was thinking about getting 4 Infinity ref 8W40 to replace my infinity perfect 12 since I would be able to build the enclosure for the 8" inside the rear seats and free up some more trunk space.

This would only happen if the answer to my question above is 'yes' :-)

Thanks.

i recommend the one 12. it would sound alot better, because 8"s have a gay bass line but it really depends on what ohm the speakers are. find out the ohms of the speakers and then ill let you know. because the 100 watt amps wont do 100 watts if the ohms arent right

ahhh, the posts of the misinformed....

it entirely depends which subs you're using. the 4 8's will have an advantage in raw cone area, but if the 12 has much better xmax, then the 12 will theoretically be louder. as to the "gay bass line" this depends on the Fs of the subs being used. i can assure you that there are several 8's out there with a lower Fs than some 12's. this is why size generalizations are lame, like "15's are sloppier than 10's" etc etc.

which subs are you looking at specifically? from there, we can give you an idea as to which would work a little better for you

i was thinking about 4 infinity ref 840W ... or the Kicker Comp VR 05CVR84 to replace my infinity perfect 12.1.... would only replace if 4 would produce just as low as loud.....the kickers can be wired as 8 ohm subs as well.

the specs can be found on crutchfield.

thanks.

this is 2005 not 1995 size doesnt necessarily mean its better/worse, depends on the speaker but there are 8s out there that hit just as good if not better than 12s. I'm interested in your plan to build an enclosure inside the rear seats spill some details

Well right now i have my sub box built into the 60%part of the rear fold down seat. (have not updated my sounddomain site yet ... i have 2 12's back then)....

The box still sticks out about 3 inches. If I were to get 8's i could make a box to house all 4 8's and it would not stick out of the seat....it would be completely covered with the seat cloth and you would not know there were subs in the trunk.

The rear of the box would have 2" foam so that when you someone seats on the rear seat it would feel like a normal seat not a box grinding into your back. Like I said i have it done for the 12 right now (and i have a lot of trunk room now but would like it to look like have no subs at all.

I will take pics and post them by this weekend.

oh so you basically ripped out all the metal seat framing and used the enclosure itself as a box? I'd love to do that if I had the time cant wait to see some pics.

i just got a chance to look at each of them in depth (sorry for the delay).

the comp vr has barely more xmax but much more mms (barely more excursion but more moving mass), slower transient response, and minimally better BL (the only real reason it's better is because it has to be being a larger sub than the 8"). in terms of the Fs, the 12" CVR is only 2 hz lower (the Fs on the 840W is 28.8 which is great for an 8" sub) so someone's theory about 8's not being able to get as low as 12's is debunked in this issue.

my final recommendation: get the 4 840W's with something like this:
http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/2858
and just be careful with the gains.

its not metal....all plastic...used a jig saw to cut out a rectangular hole that would fit my sub box....the only metal parts are theparts that hook the fold down seats to the rear deck and allow it to fold down

Thanks...i am currently using the MTX 6500D to power my sub (used it for 2 sub before)....it put out more then 800watts rms at 2 ohms according the the MTX test sheet....the only thing i don't like about the 840Ws is that they can only be wired as 4ohms...which means if i hook them up in parallel it the amp will see a 1ohm load.

The 6500D HATES 1 ohm, not a good idea.

BTW - forgot to shout out at Greg. Long time no talk! Good to see you're still around, although I'm not very often lately, .

is there enough volume in there? have you considered a fiberglass enclosure to retain the shape and use all possible area there?

just an idea.

I'm currently tossing (well...selling ) my 12"w3's for 4 RE8's (ported of course). If the first 4 go well... another 4 will be going in shortly after (gotta love extended cab trucks ).

So it ill be the 4 RE8's vs. the 2 12w3's. $56 a piece from REaudio.com....you can't go wrong. 1 w3 cost me well over $200 (got them when the first came out).

I'l let you know how it turn's out.....or maybe you want to buy my W3's?

Yes there will be enough room....if i got the 8' (i believe they need about .25-.4ft^), i would be putting 3 in the 60% part of the fold downseats and 1 in the 40% part....i did think about fibreglassing but too much work involved...I originally thought about making paper mache mold from the foam inside the seat and then fibreglassing that...but time and cost would be way more then making a simiple box which would fit in there and not be seen.

I would love to see pics of this. I really don't know if anyone has ever attempted what you're doing in a GA. At least, not since I've been around here. 8's do have the potential to play deep and loud. I was tossing around the idea of going with a pair of 8's to save trunk space, but I just decided to go with one 12 instead. You have to keep in mind that more subs is not always better. Four 8's means four different speakers sending out four sound wave patterns. If not set up properly, it could kill the sound by wave cancellation. You wouldn't have to worry about this with just one driver. However, like I said, I would LOVE to see four 8's and know how it turns out as far as sound quality.
