Quick review of the G6 GTP coupe (no test drive)

I went an looked and sat in @ a red automatic G6 GTP coupe this afternoon @ lunch.

Positives: Nice looking wheels, plenty of front driver and passanger room, more than average room in the back seat considering it was a coupe. Interior was fairly impressive, far better than the old Grand Am GT. I was impressed with the window fit, when the door is opened, the window rolls itself down an inch, when the door is closed, it rolls itself back up tightly. Guages were easy to read and looked pretty nice. Seats were supportive but comfortable. Overall a nice looking car in and out. The dealer had it priced @ $23,000, that's not too awful bad.

Negatives: I understand GM is going through a crisis right now, but on a $25K car the mirrors should be painted to match the car. The mirrors were cheap plastic, not just black painted plastic, cheap looking texured plastic. The fuel door had no internal release, but instead is the old kind with the thumb hole. On a car in this segment I do not expect this. My co-workers 2002 Hyundai Accent has a remote fuel door release and the door is flush with the vehicle and this is on a car without factory A/C, all the more reason why this SS vehicle should have it. Wheel well gap was excessive, but I expected that, still it's a negative, especially considering the wheels are 18's, it's not a pickup truck, no need for this much wheel well gap. Rear end looks like a Solara. Not a positive.

I'd like to take one of these for a test drive out of curiosity. Also, I didn't bother to look in the trunk.

What is the point of the window going down an inch? Is that supposed to be a selling point? Not arguing with you, I'm asking a general question. Thats funny about the gas door, my 95 grand am has the release inside the car. I pretty much agree with you on everything you said. I havent test driven one either... I should though even though I'll never buy a new car anytime soon.

The window going down an inch and then coming up to seal is what my old 95 M3 had...I always figured it was for better sealing. I always used it as a gadget that people had never seen before.

Better seal. One of the common problems with the GA was water leakage through the door. I had that problem with my old 01 GAGT.

When you open the door it rolls itself down and when you close it the window goes back up? Everytime? I don't get it?

Might be a coupe only thing. The doors on a coupe are a lot bigger than the sedan so maybe they need "extra" sealing.

It's a $25,000 car. Even my 1990 Ford Probe has remote fuel door release with a flush mount fuel door, as do most vehicles that cost over $8,000 brand new (might be all of them). Not to mention it's got painted mirrors, and no excessive wheel well gap. That's on a 15 year old car.

The Grand Am GT had painted mirrors, the G6's competition has painted mirrors... no... the negaitves are valid. Might explain why it doesn't sell like the GA did.

Just get Black and you don't have to worry about the non-painted mirrors

Perhaps not remote (not sure how it opens then), but it's flush mount as you can see and doesn't look like it belongs on a Cavalier like the new GM cars lack of attention to detail and cost cutting on even their more expensive cars. BTW this is a $29,000 Benz.

See the bulge on the cheap looking fuel door? Not only is it cheap looking, the fuel door wasn't aligned correctly, might have just been on that one G6 I looked at but....

Even a damned Kia Rio has flush mounted fuel doors.

Just to clarify, I am not bashing GM or the G6, but I will stand my ground on the positives and the negatives.

Personally, I don't really care about remote fuel door. I have to open the filler cap anyhow. How hard is it to flip out the door. *Flip* Ooooh, that was hard.

I've hard cars with remote fuel doors before, and they've frozen shut in the winter.

I can see how your other complaints are valid, but the remote fuel door is being a little picky. IMO

Edit: The Benz is a manual open. You push on one side to open it up.

Probbably woun'd be too hard if the car had some kind of mechanical handle start instead of a key either.

It's a matter of looks. It makes the car look cheesey, like the mirrors. I don't care that it's like that on my Cavalier. I didn't pay much for it. I bought it used anyway. I bought it as an appliance to get me from point A to point B.

The remote part... not as important I suppose... but on that class of car it should be there.

You keep saying its a 25,000 car. Ga's arent too far behind that. And now a days thats the price for a decent car. Newer one rather. My cars a 2001 and had 15k miles and im paying a lilover $17,000 after taxes. So im assuming a new GAGT with 0 miles has to be at least 20's. So 25 isnt really that bad for that type of car. As for the fuel door. Mercedes,Volvo,Jetta, and BMW have the fuel doors that arent pop, they are push. YOu push on the right side of the fuel door and it comes open.

edit: Btw why do u care about the door when your not the one opening ur gas tank :-P

I paid about that for my brand new 01, after rebates and such. Either way my Grand Am GT had painted mirrors. Car companies are supposed to move forward, not forward on some things, and backwards on others, like small details. Cheesy mirrors went on in 03 (?) on the Grand Am as did the elimination of the power trunk release, however the price went up.

Point is, some/most of the competition offer things that are lacking on the G6 for the same or less money. Altima, Accord, Solara, etc... It's a nice car, but some of the details are gone, they cheapend up.

That would be a step forward for the G6 as the fuel door is not designed like that. It looks cheesy.
