Go big and go ported. You should really look into this site: http://audioforum.termpro.com/cgi-bi...ultimatebb.cgi Theres alot more into SPL than people think. It's not just throwing some big subs with a big amp into your trunk. Get ready to spend some cash if you really want to compete.

And I'm assuming you want to compete since you are asking about a PURE SPL system. Otherwise I'd sway more toward SQL if you are just wanting a daily set-up that gets loud. Most pure SPL systems are meant to play test tones.

If you are going for pure SPL, it is not cheap. If you compete, you may want to move your 6x9s if you are not aloud to drop the rear seats. Also, dont be cheap with it, Fiberglass it instead of wood. I had done an SPL set-up, but, you do loose a lot of quality when you start to tune it for pure volume, and mine is primarly street driven, plus, the weight factor is very noticable when you are just driving.

Why do you think fiberglass is better?

I see very few SPL set-ups that are glassed. Most of the time glassed is jut for a look factor. If you've seen some serious SPL set-ups....they are hardly concerned about looks....

little known secret... take some box carpeting and roll it up and shove it up in there with a long screwdriver or something of the like.

Yea, they are as concerned about looks, but, Fiberglass is a lot less flexible if done right, do, your sound stays where you want it to. That rear bumper, and rear suspension on the passanger side (or gas tank, I was never really sure) seems to rattle a lot unless you Dynomat your car. Also, Weld a bar from the back sides, where to strut towers are to the rear deck, and then make a support bar going across the back, because that rear deck will flex about 1-2 inches if not.

how far are you willing to go? what class do you intend to compete in? how much money and time are you planning on spending? do you have equipment available for testing between shows? do you have enough experience with enclosure design to do this yourself?

these are all questions you need to answer.

first of all the sub i am using is a 12" stroker powered by an orion 8002. not the best amp to use but its what i have. as for the box there are boxes out there that can achieve higher gain than a simple ported enclosure. It will most likey be a variation of a 4th or 6th bandpass when properly designed they can have huge db gains.
i already have a SLQ system 2 memphis pr's in a series tuned bandpass. its time to go for all out loudness.where i live there are not alot of comps. ppl just gather at the local shop and see how loud they can get.

As for using fiber glass instead of wood? maybe coating the wood in resin. Fiber glassing flat surfaces is useless. What makes fiberglass strong is the way it bends.
I prefer to use plywood. i know what your thinking wtf am i smoking....
im talking marine grade ply wood. costs about 100$ for a 5x5 sheet. there are a lot of advantages to using it. im not going to go into to many details about it.

i think sealing off the trunk is considered a half wall not sure. I have all winter to finish this project and as for money i have all my stuff already to shouldn’t be to expensive.
as for the enclosure. i work in a cabnet shop so i have access to all the tools. sliding bed table saws, panels saws you name it i have access to it. and as for the design I need to find out the best way to face it find res frequency then I can find the proper box alignment for the sub

are you intending to do DBDrag? if so, you could stay in Street A. upgrade your amp, work on a ported or BP enclosure tuned in the 50-60hz range with port area similar to your subs sd, and there are a lot of enclosure tips and tricks i can give you depending on how much you are willing to do. duct tape can be your friend

this car is my daily driver so the only moddifying im doing is in the trunk.

really the qestion i asked was if anyone here had ever done a spl set up in there ga's and what worked best for them. but im glad your all curious and i will keep evey one updated as i put the project togther

Find someone who works for OSHA and borrow their dB meter. Thats what I did, and it worked well, but, probally not legitimit for some things, but if you were just showing off your numbers, it works.

i am so busy with work i hardly have time to fiddle with other people's stuff let alone finishing mine so a trip here wouldn't do you much good, but i can tell you what has worked in other ga's i've worked on.

what year and model do you have? 2 or 4 door?

OSHA is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, they are the people who are responsible for all the safety things in the work place, however, for differnt jobs, they monitor sound levels, i.e., you can be in somewhere with volumes over 110 dB for more than 35 minutes (or something to that nature). If you find someone or know someone that is in that particular section at OSHA, you may be able to use theirs.
