15's???

I have yet to hear anyone talk a word about 15" subwoofers here. I was just wandering why they seem to be so scarce around these boards? Is it that noone wants to give up the trunk room? Are they too much thump? (Being a bass player, that could never happen to me!) Or, does the clarity lack so much that most people just don't want to spend the extra buck on them?

I ask mainly because there's a guy in my town, who has a full-on balls to the walls Suburban with 5 Memphis Audio 15"s and like 30 other speakers in his car, and he rattles the sh!t out of when I drive by him at a gas station. Obviously he has alot of money to tune his stuff and power them accurately which blows away the "Sloppy 15" myth.

15's are great for SUV"s because their is a lot of interior room to fill with bass. In most cars, one or two 10's or 12's will suffice. I have heard 15's in cars and I think its a little overpowering, it tips the scales a little too much in favor of the lows instead of highs. In an SUV, however, they sound sick!

not only that but they lag too. 12s hit quicker, and 10s even quicker

I value my hearing to much!! There was this guy that came to my store yesterday and we installed 2 diamond audio D9 15's dual 2 ohm in a spec ported box powered them with two 1500watt diamond D6 Amps and installed a 200 amp ohio generator alternator. We did a full custom install in the back of his 1996 chevy silverado extended cab and i just woke up about 15 mins ago and my ears still feel like they are bleeding from his ungodly loud truck! I don't know how somebody could want that much bass inside a car or truck but alot of people like to have bragging rights and do competitions like db drag racing. If you do plan to install a bad ass system you have to remeber when you get up there in speaker size you are getting up there in power demand. I have a crossfire 1000d and a 125/2 highs amp in my car with a diamond d9 12 dual 2 and my alternator is currently taking a **** on me. My voltage is dropping so low that it is causing my abs light, service vehicle soon light and trac control light to go off. So if you do plan on playing with some 15's you might want to get a ohio generator 200amp alternator. I will be picking one of these up Monday for 370 shipped. Which isn't to bad but still a **** load of money to drop all at once.

I was toying around with the idea of two rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 2 15"s, and actually was looking into a new alternator. A guy I work with has 4 12"s (2 audiobahn 2 autotek) and his head lights dim real bad at night. I guess he's had serisous battery problems as well, but then again, he's got a cheapy, I told him to go get a new alternator, and an Optima, hopefully he'll listen.

I was looking into the Fosgate's because it seemed they only needed mild amount of power, at around 300-400 watts R.M.S. I think I'd rather go for some 12"s though, I mean, I don't use my trunk often except for hauling groceries occasionally... I don't know, I just think having a pair of 15"s would be cool, and make my car a tad unique in my area.

You could get away with 2 15's p2's with out getting a new alternator they don't need an incredible amount of power to sound good. I say do it if you love that low bass.

they'd definitely give you the unique factor, and a decently sized capacitor would assist rather well with the powering issues as well.

ill try to get ahold of my buddy when i get off of work and see if i can set something up so i can see the gagt with the 15's and get back to everybody.

I have a set of fifteens and ever since I got them I hae hated them. They are simply to big for our cars in a sense of trunk space and air space. They fill the entire trunk and they just make alot of noise not really rattleing they are just mean to be loud and have very little sq

...Well, what brand of subs did you have? New or used? What type of amp, and how many watts? What gauge wire, and did you have to mod your alternator? Please expand on your reasons for not liking your 15"s...

...OoOoOoOoOo... Pictures would be cool, if possible that is.

I basically chose the RF P2's because they don't need alot power. (I don't have much money to mod out my whole car, and fix the big gay dent.) I honestly am not looking to go loud as all hell, or get perfect SQ either. I really just want something that will sound good, provide low low bass (I think the P2's are 20Hz... Kappas are 18Hz.) and make people kinda admire that I have something "out of the norm" and get them talking about something else, and not that awesome body modification some lady on her cell phone did to my left reaf quarter-panel.

Ive got a 15'' Memphis LVS hooked up to a 1100/1. It does take up almost all of my trunk, but i can still get my golf clubs in...good enough for me. It is insanely loud, hits so low, especially with the back seats folded down. Like others stated tho almost to much bass for the car, rattles it to pieces(dynamat is coming soon). Ill try and get some pics up soon if anyone wants to see.

You think the 300watt RF's would the same??? I have a hard time believing a sub of so little power could shake my car that much, that's another bonus I was thinking in my head. I guess Dynamat isn't such a big deal, hell I'd do it anyway.

Does anyone know of any GA's (Sedan or Coupe) with pictures of 15"s in their trunk? Seeing as I have a sedan, I'm not concerned with losing the rarely used trunk space, but I am curious as to just how much space a ported 2x15" enclosure would take.

15s are overkill IMO I like 10s or 12s...not to say they cant hit just as "quick" as 12s or 10s (this is 2006 technology not 1992) but I value the little trunk space I have. 2 15s in a GA would sound awful unless it was done right meaning lots of sound damping

depends on the specs of the sub but I'd guess a big chunk of your trunk...between 4-6 cu ft

I have Audiobahn subs, a soundstorm amp 1200 watt 4 gauge wire I think and the only reason I don't like them is the low sound quality I didn't think before I bought I figure go big and loud and ignored the fact that they would sound like a$$ it was my fault for not thinking but oh well either way I want a set of 12's

honestly, 15s are not practical. think about what it would take to make a good sound quality system with 15s, you dneed either 8 or 10 inch sub(s) as well for the mid-high frequencies, plus they bass would drown out your mids/highs unless you had like two sets up front. then of course as mentioned earlier, dynamat is a must. who has the space or money with a grand am...

its much easier to get a pair of 10s or 12s and call it a day. these days a decent set of 10s will play as loud and deep as a single 15, and take up less space.

with my setup (pair of JL 10w6v2 and 500/1) in my new box, people swear that ive got either a 15 or a pair of 12s...and my amp isnt even tuned yet. plus, im not going for volume, im going for clarity.
