Toyota Camry May End Up U.S. Made

Camry may end up U.S. made

ASSOCIATED PRESS

TOKYO — Toyota is considering producing its mid-sized Camry sedan at new partner Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.'s U.S. plant in Indiana.

Toyota Motor Corp. president Katsuaki Watanabe said Monday that details were still being worked out on the alliance with Fuji, the Japanese maker of Subaru cars. Both sides have already said the factory in Lafayette, Ind., will produce Toyota vehicles.

The Camry was the bestselling car in the United States last year for the fourth year in a row — and eight of the last nine years. In January, Toyota introduced the remodelled Camry in the United States and showed the model in Japan on Monday.

In October, U.S. automaker General Motors Corp. said it was ending its alliance with Fuji and sold its entire 20 per cent stake. Toyota bought an 8.7 per cent stake in Fuji for about $315 million (U.S.) and became the top shareholder in Fuji.

The Indiana plant now makes about 100,000 Subaru vehicles a year, including the Outback station wagons, Legacy sedans and the Baja and B9 Tribeca sport-utility vehicles. It wasn't clear how the possible introduction of the Camry at the factory would affect Subaru production.

Since introducing the Camry in 1982, Toyota has sold more than 6.5 million Camrys in the United States. Toyota is also planning a hybrid version of the Camry that will be powered by both electricity and gasoline.
What will the Camry buyers think of the American quality

Well, damn, I think a Maybach is better. Do I own one? Nope! But I still know its better. Since they're all the same classification of cars, right? Oh wait... wasn't this thread about the Camry?

Arrow

There's 2 plants, one Subaru and the other was being used by Isuzu. So it won't affect Subaru, unless they decide to base the Camry and Legacy on the same platform. Or design another car that shares a platform.

Well, everyone knows that American quality is absolute crap compared to imports...... so as soon as they start building the Camry on American soil, even if the exact same building tools and efforts are used here...... it will immediately suck ass.

The Camry has been built in the US for over a decade, this article is saying that Toyota will build the Camry in their recently acquired Subaru plant in Indiana.

I agree! I have a 04 Solara (2 door camry) and it is pretty much a piece of junk. It has an electrical problem that nobody can figure out. My Solara was built in Kentucky.
