2007 Pontiac G5 News: Brand will receive entry-level coupe

Quote:
DETROIT -- General Motors will give Pontiac an entry-level coupe as a stopgap measure until the division gets more brand-focused products, sources close to Pontiac say. In the process, Pontiac dealers will lose the Montana SV6 minivan.

The coupe will be a high-performance relative of the Chevrolet Cobalt coupe with some Pontiac influences. The vehicle will give the Buick-Pontiac-GMC channel a shot at the small-car market, a source close to GM says. GM is still considering names for it. One option might be the G5, sources say.

Pontiac intends to launch the coupe as a 2007 model and likely will start production this fall in Lordstown, Ohio.

The car will be priced similarly to the Chevrolet Cobalt SS supercharged coupe, which starts at $20,490, including shipping.

Pontiac eventually will lose the Montana SV6 minivan, which has seen sluggish sales and does not fit Pontiac's performance-brand image, sources say. U.S. sales of the SV6 for January fell to 1,450 units, an 11.5 percent drop from 1,638 in the year-ago period.

Pontiac has lacked an entry-level car since the Sunfire died last year.

In Canada, GM sells a Cobalt sibling called the Pontiac Pursuit.

Another bland rebadged Pontiac. Brilliant!

Oh wait, i'm being bias again. Let me rephrase... this product is going to set the compact fleet market a blaze and revive the Pontiac brand renewing interest and market share. It surpasses anything the competition has to offer. If the cobalt is any indication, there is hope. It will be a fleet favorite.

The wheel gap on the Pursuit is brutal. Someone in my building has one & the rear end on that thing is so damn high. Aftermarket springs would have to lower that thing 3" or so.

BTW, the Pursuit is actually selling well in Canada.

"The new Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac Pursuit continue to outsell their predecessors with a strong December performance outpacing them by 7% Dec. ’05 vs. Dec. ‘04"

Couldn't agree more, this car is a complete waste of time. Pontiac did not need the Torent and it certainly does not need this car. The styling is not even as far removed from the Cobalt as the Sunfire was from the Cavy. It's priced higher than the Civic Si, offers a crappy interior and what is IMO poor handling. Now if it had the turbo motor instead of the supercharger for the same price as the SS, that could be a compelling reason for it to exist...

Well if it has the inteior of the solstice, I might be in. Value will prolly drop like crazy in 2 or 3 years. Pick up a nice SS version for 10 grand.

Pontaic: Drop it like 1 or 2 in, make the front longer, dual exaust, and do something with the head lights. I love the rear.

Just my .02

Congrats GM... lets review:

- Late to the game
- Rushed product with little thought
- Re-badged car already offered in two other versions

The epitome of GM.

Is this car even necessary?? is there demand for this car?? I just don't understand the management decisions that GM execs are making lately

Am I the only one who thinks this sorta looks like our late model GA's? Its probably just because of the front end... maybe its just me.

Why do speedo's always go to like 150 or something ungodly like that? I don't like that 95% of my driving, I only use like 1/2 my gauge space.

If they dump the engine from the forthcoming Solstice GXP in there and make sure it has a manual, it'll be pretty zippy. It's better than the sunfire's styling in anycase.

Oh god yes! I hate the new names. Once lexus and infinite started all that, copying mercedes and bmw that is, everyone started switching to the letter/number naming game. I think it's stupid. There's so many letters and numbers out there you can't tell them apart and the cars don't stand out and have their own identity. I think the G6 should've kept the grand am name.

As for this car, yeah I don't really see the need either with the ion and cobalt out already. Maybe if they made it a little more different in some significant way, like offer a powertrain or some other option not available on the other cars, then it might fill in some other market segment. But OMG, that might actually take some progressive thinking and new ideas! As it is, the car doesn't look bad. I like the back end. Front's ok but don't like the head lights. That wheel gap is just god awful though! When is someone at GM gonna realize their cars look like entry's in the baja 500?
