Question 2.2L Ecotec owners

Hello everyone!!

I am looking at purchasing a 2002 - 2005 Grand Am with the 2.2L Ecotec engine. Could I please get some input on this engine (mileage, power, reliability, satisfaction). Also would you prefer the four speed auto, or the five speed manual.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

My brother-in-law has the Ecotec in his 2003 Cavalier. According to him, it's been extremely reliable, fuel-efficient, and delivers good power. I have no reason to doubt that this engine would be just as reliable in a Grand Am.

I have the Ecotec in my 03 Alero with 51k and have had no trouble with the engine at all. Its just the other stuff that tends to be junk (IE: brakes, hubs, ect)

I've got an Ecotec in my '06 Cobalt. Only 10k on the clock and obviously its reliable.

Mileage in a 2,900 lb car with a manual and a leadfoot driver is around 26 mpg city. Up to 35 highway. If you have the chance, get the Ecotec with a manual. You'll be alot happier.

You'll probably end up getting the 4 speed as 5 speed GA's are very rare...

Great motor, but your going to look for a while to find a GA with a 5 speed. Good luck. When/if you do get one, hold on to it.

mods for the 2.2 ecotec

Question i just bought the 2002 grand am se with the ecotec engine 2.2litre.
Is there anything i can do to increase horse power on this car etc.......
I looked on ebay and found some really cheap stuff.....ower speed chip that claims a 20+ hp increase etc.... plus an auto trans interceptor that claims to make shifting better and better accelleration i guess....do they work? Is there anything else out there??? If so where? Thanks!

how much money do you want to spend? you can get the GM ECO S/C for 3 grandish. i dont think anyone has put it on an n-body yet but some cavies have. check out www.j-body.org for some more info. other than that, look for an intake, get a custom exhaust, and buy a header from www.pfyc.com.

Check out this site for more ecotec info. I have the five speed and get around 32 MPG year round. I have 67,000 miles on it so far. I got it cheap because many people are looking for an automatic GA.

Good mileage, may not be the fastest but no problems and it gets going quick.

WEll i dont want to spend 3000....what im looking for is a chip or something? Do they sell one? Anyone know about the one im talking about on ebay? Not really a chip but it claims 20 hp gains which i find very hard to believe. What about the auto trans?? Anyone heard of that? Does it work??? Right now i want cheap mods with some gains....what about the intake system...??? That would be a nice start....where can i get one? Thanks for the help so far. Love the car although its a 4door and well it only has the 2.2 ecotec....but its a nice zippy little car and its great on gas compared to the 95 GMC Jimmy piece of crap i had before.

From what I have read, stay away from the ebay "chips". They are resistors that make it seem like your engine is drawing in colder air and it richens the mixture.

A cold air intake (CAI) may help some, gives you about 5 hp. I didn't see any increase with my cat back exhaust system. It sounds a lot better and I got a little better MPG's cause I was shifting sooner due to the sound. Any of them bolt up without any modification. The 99+ GA's have the same flange after the cat. converter.

Use the search about the tranny mod, I have a manual and haven't really read up on them. You can also try those who drag race. They know what brings the times down.
