My first attempt at using a Porter Cable 7424 (pic)

I finaly got the chance to try it out.
Test mule: My 96 GMC Z71
Panel i chose was the driver side door.
I taped off half the door with painters tape for a 'before and after' affect, it didnt turn out the way i wanted it to but you get the idea.

Process and products:
Wash with NXT soap
Clayed with Clay Magic from autozone
Meguires #83 DACP (X2), applied with PC and heavy cutting pad (orange sonus pad) starting at speed 3 and gradually bumped it up to speed 6.
Sonus SFX-2 (X2), applied with PC and medium cutting pad (green sonus pad) starting at speed 3 and gradually bumped it up to speed 6.
Meguires #82 (X2), applied with light cutting pad (blue sonus pad) starting at speed 3 and gradually bumped it up to speed 6.
Meguires #7, applied by hand removed by hand.
S100 paste wax, applied by hand removed by hand.

I didnt like the sonus SFX-2, Did a great job of clearing all the haze from megs #83 but the working time is real short making it hard to use.

Its not perfect but it was my first time and still trying to figure out my technique using this buffer and these polishes.

It's not perfect... There's two yellow rectangles and a bright white spot in the middle of the door.

Coupe... You're far to obessed with detailing.

I used to be too but I don't care anymore...

There is much better BUT for OTC carwash NXT is voted best on autopia.org. Things like carwash and quick detailer i like to buy OTC becuase i go through so much of it.

I am gonna be buying #83 and #82 by the gallon here soon so no worry's on having polish, just have a wax that you like and we are set. I still gotta find a medium cut polish, that sonus SFX-2 just sucked goat balls, it worked GREAT for sure but the working time is short. When a polish breaks down to fast it will dry to fast and then you will end up with even more marring and scratches than before you started.

Yeah there is some kind of flake in it, i didnt realize how pretty the paint on my truck was until i detailed that section.

yeh looked a bit like a silver flake. its too bad about the sonus. currently ive got a new bottle of NXT Tech Wax that I want to give a try. sometime today i'll take a picture of my shelving full of cleaners, my bro recently did me a favor and cleaned/organized it so now it looks amazing.

tonight i think im gonna order a foam gun. i tried a cheap version by using a pesticide attachment but didn't get the right mixing out of it which is unfortunate.

OTC= over the counter.

I preffer OTC products its just that what i need you cant get at just any auto store. I get all my meg products from an auto body supply shop here in town (almost everytown has one) which is great, i hate ordering online especialy when its something i go through alot of like quick detailer and car soap. So far the only detailing stuff ive bought online is my PC kit.

We REALLY need to set up a date and do this. Need to have sufficient time though so we can get more people involved.

O.K. Coupe....I think I am gonna break down this week and buy a 7424 BUT I have a few questions.....

My car is in VERY nice shape but I am trying to figure out which products I need....the Porter Cable is a given...but as far as which Meguuiars/Poor Boys products and which pads I need.....maybe Meguiars #82 and a blue pad? Or maybe just Meguiars #80 and blue pad?

Also, how much use do you get out of a pad? When it gets dirty..what do you do? I am sure they are too pricey to just throw away regularly....

I also want to limit cutting into my clear coat SO I want to be as gentle as possible...its not like I am trying to bring the finish back from the dead or anything....

Also, have you heard anyone who polishes with these polishing products and then tops off with Zaino..I have become a Zaino follower in the past 2 years....as much help as possible would be awesome. My car has to last as long as possible and be able to look nice in the UBER-hot Nevada sun.

oops sorry

As far as products and pads i dont know. You just have to try everything. Mix and match. I got lucky with what i did and how it turned out. It could have come out horribly with no change.

The pads should last at LEAST 20 full uses if not triple that. All i do to clean them is put them in a bucket of water and dawn dish soap and hand wash them. Then i let them air dry. It takes forever for them to dry BTW, like 4 days, kinda sucks but thats why i bought more. I have 3 of each pad now.

Alot of people top these polishes with Zaino, no worries there.
