Holden SS Commodore is off to America

Holden's cat out of bag - SS off to America
Joshua Dowling Motoring Editor in Detroit
January 9, 2007

AUSTRALIA'S biggest-selling car, the Holden Commodore, will be exported to the US, it has been unofficially confirmed at the Detroit motor show.

The announcement was not due to be made until the Chicago motor show next month, but the worldwide head of product development at General Motors, Bob Lutz, gave away more than he was supposed to during a news conference.

Just minutes after Holden officials refused to answer questions about the Commodore's export program, Mr Lutz revealed details about the deal.

The Commodore SS, a V8- powered sports sedan, will be sold as a Pontiac from late this year or early next year.

Holden expects to export 30,000 Commodores annually, about half what it sells locally.

"We are seriously planning to import a lot of Commodore SS sedans as Pontiac G8s," Mr Lutz said, adding that Holden could export up to 50,000 Commodores a year if the model was priced correctly.

Mr Lutz said the export of the Holden Monaro as a Pontiac GTO from 2003 to last year (during which 40,000 of the V8 coupes were sold) brought Holden's expertise to the attention of its parent company, General Motors in North America.

"We are yet to officially announce it," Mr Lutz said of the Commodore export deal, once he realised that he had made a faux pas.

He eventually admitted that selling the V8 version of the Commodore in the US was such a logical thing to do as it filled a void in Pontiac's line-up.

"While [the Monaro's] export program may not have fulfilled all of our hopes and dreams in terms of profitability and volume, it did break the ice on global programs."

Nice replacement for the GP/Bonnie Pontiac is making a nice comeback now just make the G6 RWD and get rid of that garbage G5 no need for a rebadged cobolt. Never thought I'd say this but I may consider one now that the GTO is gone

Unofficially official: Holden sedan to become Pontiac G8: Unofficially official: Holden sedan to become Pontiac G8

Holden has apparently finalized the deal to rework the flagship Commodore SS into a Pontiac sport sedan. Back in our October 2006 issue, we broke the story of a proposed GM plan to bring to America a face-lifted version of the new Holden Commodore SS-V as a Pontiac. GM brass has reportedly signed off on the plan, and the official announcement is expected to be made at next month's Chicago auto show.

Apparently, GM product czar Bob Lutz didn’t get the memo and gave away details about the deal at a Detroit show press conference, according to a report in Australia’s Drive.

We speculated in October the car could be called the Grand Prix, but will now be called the G8 (Lutz mentioned the name in his Detroit show remarks to Drive) to keep it in line with Pontiac’s current naming strategy. The G8 will be powered by GM’s new 6.0-liter Vortec V-8, which develops 362 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Buyers will be offered a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission and 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. The automatic version of the Commodore SS-V reportedly nails a 0-to-60-mph time of less than 5.8 seconds and the standing quarter mile in just south of 14.

Lutz went on to say Pontiac may be able to sell as many as 50,000 copies of the vehicle a year if priced right. The G8 is expected to hit the market late this year or early next year.

This is great news, this looks like the performance boost Pontiac is needing. By 2009 we'll have this and most likely a new GTO, the G6 and G5 will be at the end of their lifespan then too, so there is a lot going on!

Man, seriously, WTF is up with the G# BS? I was sick of it after I heard of the G6. I instantly thought: What a pathetic way to try and make the 6th GA gen sound 'cool'! pfft
Look! It's the new G6! Only: it's a camaro! pfft

Other than that, I can't wait for the Commodore ^.^

^^ I think a lot of it is just so they can sell the car anywhere under the same name; they don't want name it something in english that means something else in another language (READ: Buick Lacrosse in Canada)

No Buick LaCrosse in name in Canada (because of a Quebec slang term)

Well, the GTO's power is simply awesome but the design compared to the Monaro version is under par. I wouldnt say that the GTO is emasculated but from the original design its kinda sissy looking.
