Screw putting more rediculous measure into the car. I had a friend get a DUI for sitting in his passenger seat at a party listening to music on his radio. he had the key in the ignition while he was in the passenger seat. Tired of the party he was throwin, wanted to take a nap in his car in front of his house. Cop pulled up he went to jail I get a phone call.

THIS **** IS STUPPPPPPPPPID!

Anyways, the device that toyota is wanting to make is just another reason that makes people stupider. One less reason for us to think for ourselves. You guys must like having electronic devices telling you what to do. The truth of the matter is, you get a DUI if you have a good enough attorney, you get off. What needs to happen is if you get a DUI, you get anally raped hard by the system. Oh something really burningly painful, loss of your vehicle and license to the state, plus DUI school.

What people need to do, is learn, and be educated. Bartenders need to learn to recognize someone who is under the influence. People need to also be educated that they can call a cab home, or have a designated driver.

Myself and many others would agree, this is just a waste of money time and effort.

X ten million. you hit that one on the head. Cars lately are getting so much unnescesarry bs in them lately that they are hard to work on. The only thing needed is to hold people accountable, what happens when someone gets past this and kills someone else, will they sue toyota because the system failed them?

This is a stupid invention. If they make it an option nobody will buy it. If the NHTSA requires it then every automaker will have to liscense Toyota's patents...

This product violates your rights? Wow. I wasn't aware we had the right to drive drunk. It would only violate your rights if the product reported a blow over .08 to the police directly. Altho, being stranded in your car in the middle of the road coz you're drunk is probably gonna catch a cop's attention anyway.

Unfortunately, the system will probably not work very well initially. But, in the future, I can see a product like this in all vehicles. It would be great if it was associated with the keyless entry to your car. That way, you could blow while you were in the party and get an idea of how much time you need to wait before you can hit the roads.

Land of the free, home of the brave. Little by little your rights and freedoms are being taken away.

There used to be a time that I could decide when to turn my headlights on or if I felt like wearing a seat belt. I could decide if I wanted to wear a helmet on my motorcycle and my kids didn't need a helmet on their bicycles.

The government keeps chipping away at your choices. It that the way you really want it to be?

I don't care if you wear your seatbelt or not, but if you drive around at night without headlights on or you want to drive when you're drunk then you should have your rights taken away.

you want to get hurt go jump off a bridge.

Some people DO have better judgement and control than others, but you can't speak for them and not those that don't.

Nissan joins the fray...

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/08/06/n...eut/index.html

Quote:
OPPAMA, Japan (Reuters) -- Beer-breaths beware.

A new concept car with breathalyser-like detection systems may provide even greater traction for Japanese efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road.

Nissan's alcohol-detection sensors check odor, sweat and driver awareness, issuing a voice alert from the navigation system and locking up the ignition if necessary.

Odor sensors on the driver and passenger seats read alcohol levels, while a detector in the gear-shift knob measures the perspiration of the driver's palm when starting the car.

Other carmakers with detection systems include Sweden's Volvo , which has developed technology in which drivers blow into a measuring unit in the seat belt before an engine can start.

But Nissan's car includes a mounted camera that monitors alertness by eye scan, ringing bells and issuing a voice message in Japanese or English if a driver should pull over and rest.

The car technology is still in development, but general manager Kazuhiro Doi says the combination of detection systems will ultimately keep an eye on who's behind the wheel.

"We've placed odor detectors and a sweat sensor on the gear shift, but for example if the gear-shift sensor was bypassed by a passenger using it instead of the driver, the facial recognition system would be used," said Doi.

Also keeping a short leash on drivers, car seat belts tighten if drowsiness is detected, while an on-road monitor checks if a car is keeping its lane properly.

Japan's No. 3 carmaker has no specific timetable for marketing, but aims to yoke all technology to cut the number of fatalities involving its vehicles to half 1995 levels by 2015.

Nissan's Doi says they still have to distil exactly what impairment means: "If you drink one beer, it's going to register, so we need to study what's the appropriate level for the system to activate."

Normally I would say this is a violation of rights, but when you get behind the wheel drunk you not only put your own life at risk but the risk of others as well. Its a good idea as long as its not super sensitive... like going out having 2 maybe 3 beers and all of a sudden your car won't start.
