Amp + sub + box for $149.00

Hi guys,

I am looking into adding just a sub into my gt. I have the monsoon system in my 2003 and i think it's great for what i need. Treble and midrange are what i am looking for but i find the bass lacking.

I understand that it is best to add another amp to the car..as from what I read when i searched..and hook the sub up to that.

I also have an aftermarket JVC hu from my older car that can throw out 300w The aftermarket unit had cost me approx 300 when i purchased it about a year ago and was highend at the time. But I don't really wana go through the trouble and install it (unless I absolutely need to) as the stock hu is just fine for me.
I saw this deal on sale..

Bazooka 250-Watt Mono Amplifier (CSA150.1)
Rockford Fosgate P110S4 Punch 10" Sub
Bassworx 10" Hatchback Sealed Subwoofer Box (SW10B)

all for 149.00 as a package.

The link here has all the specs on each.

I am not a pro at car audio and I am not a newb. I understand the basic concepts and feel comfortable installing this myself along with the tutorials I found here when I searched.

My question is...is this a good deal or is all this cheep stuff?
What I am looking for is just some more bass than the current monsoon system offers. I want to be able to feel the bass more...but not insane levels. I mainly listen to r&b, rap, hiphop..soca, reggae..etc. Mostly urban music..and I don't usually have my music blasting unless im on the highway..

what do you guys think? if it's worth it..I will go down today and listen to it myself and see.

I say tell us if its a good deal after you listen to it. for $150 its not a bad deal. i've never ran a bazooka amp, but as far as the p1 woofer goes, its not a horrible woofer. i'm not a big fan, cause i think it lacks in the sound quality department, but i think it would suit you well, for just wanting to add some bass.

first of all; a $300 JVC hu is hardly high end and the fact its 300max where most if not all now are 400+, but i wont bash ur old decisions.
so, my personal gut is that a good sub is around 120ish each, good amp about 200 and box eh figure 60-100. all of that adds of to about $300. now ur sittin at about half that so dont expect much i guess

Well, at the time ...it was over a year ago.... and 300w was pretty good and for that sale price it was a nice deal. It hase everything...lcd, MP3, motorized, equalizer was great, connects ipod/mp3, face comes off..bunch of other stuff but i didn't really use it to its full potential. My point was it is better than the stock monsoon hu and I wouldnt have to purchase a new one.

$300 seems reasonable but I am not an audiophile. Just looking for somthing that provides more than the stock monsoon can put out. Again..everyone's taste is different but thanks for the input.

Well, the amp alone is 100...the sub 100 and the box is 70.. so thats 270. It sounds like a good deal of savings.

Envee, whats your old system consist of? Price?

wait a minute. are you 2 going back and forth about how many watts a HU is? much like with amps, peak doesnt matter. its probably 22x4, or 25x4. doesnt really matter.

either way, deck amps are pretty much useless.
so why dont u put that deck in ur car? and as far as P1 subs go....ewww cuz they have crummy foam surrounds and to me just feel and hear cheap. like some1 said b4, they are decent at loudness but when it comes to actual sound quality ugh

The only reason I didn't want to put the deck in was becuase of the work I had to do. Call me lazy... but to remove it from the old car..then go out and purchase the harness and mounting bracket..and install it. Not to mention finding an antena adapter and then putting back the old HU in the old car so not to leave a big hole in the dash. And the weather has been so cold lately...

But whatever...If i need to install it to get everything working then so be it. I have read that alot of guys on here are using thier stock HU and everything sounds great... why go through all the trouble If i dont need to? I've also read some guys needed more juice out of the HU so they went aftermarket as apposed to stock.

I know what you mean by cheep sound. If that's what you think the punch sounds like then I will definetly keep looking around. The point of the thread was to gather your opinions on the sub and amp. Thanks!

So what I gather is the sub is more important than the amp.
What's a good sub that gives you deep bass?

For just the sub and amp...I would think to top off at $400...but obviously, the cheeper the better. I am heading out tonight to listen to a bunch of diff ones at the local 2001 Audio/Video store. They sell pioneers, infinity, alpine..etc...so I will get a better idea then.

i highly recomend looking or hearing i should say, to everything you can. what kind of a woofer are you looking for? i'm assuming that you want more Sound Quality, then Sound Presure Level (SPL). if thats the case, i'd recomend the brands below.

Dimoand Audio
Boston Acoustics
MB Quart
Infinity Kappa
Kenwood Excelon
Image Dynamics

just a few i would check out before you bought anything.

Sounds like a decent price on that setup, but kinda like everyone else has said, it's gonna be a cheaper sounding system. If you take some time and look around, you can put together a system for pretty cheap - especially if you don't mind buying used stuff or waiting for good sales/clearances. I put together an almost identical setup (10" single sub on the monsoon system) with better components, so can give you a little advice. For my system I kept an eye out and found a used 10" Infinity Kappa DVC subwoofer for about $75 shipped to me - a very good sub for the price I got it. I would recommend looking for the same if you want decent sound quality. I also made my own 1 cu. ft. box for about $30 with carpet, cables, and metal sub cover - if you don't mind spending a couple hours to make it, it's definitely worth it. You're also gonna need about $20 for a speaker line-level converter to hook up to the monsoon and about $20-30 for cables (it's easiest to just pick up a kit).

Now for the amp, you need to be kinda picky if you're gonna maintain the monsoon amp and connect your sub into it. I tried a 200w x 2 Sony amp (bridged) at first and it didn't have enough power - I had the gain all the way up and it wouldn't put out much sound. For some reason, when you hook everything up and plug the monsoon amp back in, you lose about 75% of your sound. Try it with the big blue plug unhooked from the monsoon amp (with your volume down) and then try plugging it in - you will realise what I'm talking about. So to keep this setup, you're gonna have to bump up your amp some. I went with a Lightning Audio 700w Mono amp and that was enough to give me some good bass. I still have the gain set at about 75% on the amp (a lot higher than normal), but it runs well and gives me some flexibility in bass output.

All together my system ran me around $200-250 (can't remember the exact price anymore), and I think it is a decent system for what I wanted - small, good sound quality, and relatively cheap. Lemmie know if you have any questions and I'll help you out if I can.

Im gona head out just now and listen to a bunch of different ones. I won't buy anything until I post back and get some opinions.

I will look for an amp and a sub. Instead of paying someone for the install..I am gona do it myself...that extra money can go into better components.
So much good info. Thnx everyone.

OK..so after some time listening..

I narrowed it down to the MTX 10" Sub found here

I am working on getting 2 of these...used for about 200. I heard it today at futureshop and it sounded sik!

I also heard a 12" Alpine SWS1222D for $159.99 and a Pioneer 10" TSW256 for $100 even but neither sounded as good as the MTX. The Alpine was better than the pioneer.

As for the amp..I will wait till I pick up the subs first. Where ever I went..it's like no one cared I didn't want to go over 400... first thing they show me is a $360 amp. I wrote down some model numbers and am looking into getting them used for much cheeper. I didn't realise the subs were cheeper than the amps.

Any recomendations?

I suggest some of you check out Lanzar car audio. The local store by my house is one of the best shops in this state and his Lanzar van holds the California state record. Lanzar is very Hi quality and not expensive. My subs and Amp are lanzar (4 12's, 2 amps) My 12's are 2000 watts each, 1000 watts RMS, and cost me 500 bucks for 4 NEW. (125$ a peice) The amps each push 1000 watts @ 1 ohm and cost 200$ each new. Those of you who belonmg to the lanzar family . I'm not sayin this becuase its my favorite company, Ive owned Alpine subs, kenwood, rockford, Efx, and heard every other kind. And Lanzar is #1 in my books
