Question About This Amp.
I am really thinking about getting this amp, it seems like it is pretty decent and it is in my price range. The only question i have is if it can power the two subs i want.
Here is the amp im looking at. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166840602629 And Here is the type of subwoofer im going to get. Im getting two of them. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166840602883 Now can That amp above, power Two of those 12" subs? And if so will it sound good? Another question i have is...do you think i should power my car speakers(they are kenwoods-6x9's from bestbuy) with an amp, or should i just leave them alone and only power my subs. ok good. do that, then get back to us. if u dont like em, look online for a better brand. the amp isnt bad, but won't be able to push much more than entry level subs.

and what do you all think about hooking my car front door panel speakers and my rear deck speakers up to an amp? Is this a good idea...i have been told before that its a good way to blow your speakers, is this true?

well if the speakers are aftermarket....then yes amp them. make sure the amp has a high pass filter too. as for subs, thats a decent entry level setup. i have a friend that has that sub in a ported box....says he loves it

first off, that amp only puts out 250 watts RMS. you cant even power one of those subs (based in its supposed power rating) with that amp. ive never heard those subs, but i only like kenwood for head units, the rest is junk.
powering aftermarket speakers off the deck is a great way to blow them. they need to be powered, but they need clean power. dont get a junk amp, it wont help you much.

He can replace the factory speakers and run them off the headunit, and decide whether or not he wants to amp them later. |

Thats what i had planned on doing...i didnt really want to spend more money on a 2nd amp just to add a little power to my speaker. I always thought that if you put too much power in the speakers from the amp that the speaker whould blow.

But yeah, I suggest replacing the speakers first. If you want more, there are ways to improve the sound of those speakers, including deadening the surrounding panels and/or adding an amp. NOTE if you have one of those Monsoon systems (factory amp on the left side of the trunk behind the carpet) then there may be a bit more work involved in getting your aftermarket speakers wired up properly. I would check the stickies. |

what you guys all fail to recognize is that power doesnt blow speakers, distortion does. a factory deck puts out way too much distortion for most decent aftermarket speakers, and especially at higher volumes, a factory deck distorts enough to blow them.
you can do what you want, i have no personal gain from giving you advise based on my 13 years of car audio experience.

1. That factory speakers are MORE durable than 'decent' aftermarket speakers (ie factory speakers won't blow but aftermarket ones running off of the same source will). 2. That you won't HEAR them distorting bad enough to know that you're damaging them. 3. That the aftermarket speakers won't sound better (louder, cleaner, and more dynamic) than factory speakers when run off of the same source, and also that they won't be able to go louder than factory speakers before they start distorting. And IME these assumptions are wrong 95% of the time. Quote:

as a side note, factory systems are designed and set up so that the speakers wont blow from the deck under any condition. they fail to account for deterioration over time by sun light and dry rot. if you run a fully factory system that was put together by the manufacturer (meaning they were all meant to work together), all new parts will work and you CANT blow the speakers.

Well, I don't have the scientific knowledge to confirm or deny whether or not a cheaper, crappy factory paper cone speaker can handle more abuse than a well-built aftermarket speaker. In an odd way, I guess it could be possible. But, I can only base my stand on my own experiences. Until someone comes along with the science behind factory vs aftermarket 'abuse', I guess we can agree to disagree.
That being said...in the five cars that I've owned since I started driving (sometime in the 90s Like I said above, protecting the speakers from freqs that are too low for them is key, and any speaker should be able to take more 'volume abuse' when it's not being subjected to as much 'frequency abuse'. Until then... Quote:

Ok, you guys are all talking about the speakers playing frequencies too low for it too handle, but my speakers wont be playing that much of low frequencies, cuz im going to have my bass on the speakers turned all the way down, and run all bass through my Subwoofer. Is that what i should do to avoid blowing my car speakers?

I was also wondering if it would even be worth the money to replace my factory speakers. I already have an aftermarket deck (JVC), and i was looking at a pair of $100 kenwood 6x9's and a pair of $60 Kenwoods for the door panals. Is this a waist of money? I dont know how much a pair of good speakers go for so i have no idea if i should replace mine with these or not.

for post 18, pu the high pass filter on on your deck. what im gonna do wednesday (wen my subs get here) is put my deck on the lowest high pass filter it has (50) which is still above the lowest my speakers can go (40). so i'll still get some bass outta em yet.
