It's Official: Goodbye High Horsepower era...again

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4911197.html

CAFE standards passed. Everyone has 13 years to find a way to get their general public vehicle to 35mpg or better. Camaro and G8 will be the last of the new V8s with high horsepower. Only thing that will trudge on is the Vette.

Glad I just bought the '06 GTO. Actually, this is one of the reasons I did....

I remember reading something about the average mpg in the entire product line has to be 35mpg+ so that would mean if pontiac/chevy/etc could make a few cars that get 40-50mpg and sell a ton of them then we can still have that sports car even if it can only get 20-25mpg its not really going to drag the average down that much b/c they don't sell anywhere near as many. I just dont see high HP cars like the GTO going away people want them. So this bill is going to put Porsche/Ferrari/etc out of business? I just don't see it happening

Knowing the auto companies this will just be another tax paid by the consumer. Lets just hope that the House changes things enough.

I agree w/ Farzi; they'll probably find some loophole

Read that it was passed but not put into regulation. In fact I still think that it has to go to the senate to get voted on.

So, when will we see 0W-0 synthetic motor oil ?

Refer to North America's usage of 5W-20 synthetic blend motor oils; because of CAFE.
(& 0W-20 synthetic motor oils in hybrids.)

Well then it has to go to the house to get passed. Sorry must of had it backwards.

Either way apparently there is a lot of fighting left to do over the bill.

this is straight ****in retarted. making every vehicle near 35 MPG is out of reach with the current technology. They are basically relying on hybrids right now and nothing else. Fuel cells haven't even debuted. By the way, something I learned at the GM proving grounds- the city MPG standards are at around 25 MPH, and the highway standards are based around 55 MPH. I thought that was really interesting, cause when the regular average consumer goes to buy a car and it says 40 MPG CITY, it's only going 25.

I doubt this could even happen(i know it did), I don't understand why the government wants to hurt the big three even more. Theres still time to change it so who knows what will really happen.

All this and w/o even factoring in air conditioning, clogged air filter, underinflated tires, etc.

And to make things worse the EPA has redone the mileage calculations to be more "realistic" so the consumer and manufacturer are screwed even worse while the govt makes out like a bandit.

If its all Vehicle's there's no way in hell your going to get 30 mpg in a Truck!

Just another example of the government sticking their noses in where they have no business being at all.

Why does the government need to regulate the mileage that cars get? Especially something as impractical as what this new bill requires. I was listening to a guy from GM on the radio the other day when this new bill was passed and he said with our current technical, it ain't gonna happen. Granted, they have 12 1/2 years to figure it out, but what if they still aren't there then?

I guess what bothers me is my opening sentence. Why do they feel the need to say what cars from a Private Company can and can not do? This is not what our government is there for.

Then who should regulate it?? A private corporation??

Anyways what bothers me is that while gas prices keep rising oil companies keep posting record earnings and profits. How about the government jump in a make them cut their profits and lower gas prices?

What's really ironic is that by making all this alternate energy stuff more prevalent the government is actually going to make gas prices even higher. The oil companies have figured out there's no point in investing more money into greater refining capability because there won't be as much demand. As such the price will go up and availability go down.

Yea what also is bad is that corn and other corn products are already getting more expensive in the store. Used to be that corn oil was the cheapest and best type of cooking oil. Now its the most expensive and its only been about a year since the big e85 push has been going on. Then every time we eat a resturant it will be more expensive because they can only use corn oil because of the trans fat issue going on.

E85 is not the answer.
