replace Monsoon 6x9's
Hey,
I have looked around but can't get an answer to this question. I need to replace the rear 6x9's in my 2001 Grand Am SE. What type of AFTERMARKET speakers are compatible with the Monsoon config? Specifically : A. Impedance - How many ohm's should new the speakers be? B. Power - What is the recommened RMS for replacing these speakers? Thanks very much, GrandAmSE enthusiast |

Any 6x9 will work. Most new speakers are 4ohms and any rms speaker will work also. Just go out and pick out a 6x9 you think sounds good to you. With some speakers depending on the basket size you may have to modify the rear deck some to mount them or you could bottom mount the speaker not usually a big deal though.

Hell, I reccomend going out to Circuit City and picking up a pair of cheapy Infinity's... They can't be all that bad if Dodge uses a 500W system from them in both the Viper and SRT-10 Ram.

This is not true ... if you are looking to use the current Monsoon system then only 6*9's with Dual Voice Coils will work if you want them to sounds correctly. If you have an aftermarket deck you are better off jsut running new wire from the deck to your speakers then any 6*9 will work. Otherwise you need to look into 6*9's with the DVC. Do a search and you will find a lot of info on this topic. P.S. Infinity's are not cheap speakers ... I would recommend them in any car setup.

now was this a specific genre of music you listened on it? because some speakers are better for more acoustical music, some have more thump for heavier stuff like hip-hop, i find it hard to really compare the sound that comes from a speaker without looking at how it performs on all genre's of music.
besides, i can get a pair for under $70, considering they retail for about $200 its better to take this deal imo. and its a good replacement for the monsoon's if you arent quite ready to go hardcore. |

all things are relative. my budget is usually fairly large and i know how much more important your front stage is than your substage, so i dont mind spending $1K on a front stage and only maybe $500 on sub stage. unless competing, in which case it's a very different story

yeh, i dont plan on competing any time in the near future, i just want something that meets my needs and also is enough to impress people a bit. after i get those kappa's im gonna have to start thinking about how to redo my subs and amp in the back, im gonna be trashing those in the next year or two for something better.
but for the price, kappa's are the way to go i think. much better than most speakers you can pick up at best buy and circuit city and such places. edit: destroyed on 6x9 today (2/4/06)...

In your trunk, behind the left side carpet, there's an amp and a wiring harness that plugs into it. The thread above shows what each wire on that harness is for. Pretty much every wire is either an input from the radio, or an output to the speakers. This thread has the list of pinouts: Monsoon System Pinouts To bypass the amp, unplug the harness, match the input to the corresponding output for that speaker, and connect them at the harness. For example, if you wanted to bypass the amp and have the headunit directly connected to your new door speakers, you'd want to connect: E2 TAN Left Front Speaker Output (+) to E15 DK BLU Left Front Midrange Speaker Output (+) and E3 GRY Left Front Speaker Output (-) to E16 LT BLU Left Front Midrange Speaker Output (-) and E1 LT GRN Right Front Speaker Output (+) to F7 ORN Right Front Midrange Speaker Output (+) and F1 DK GRN Right Front Speaker Output (-) to F6 DK GRN Right Front Midrange Speaker Output (-) Just strip a little bit of wire away and jump them. Or, cut them from the harness and splice them together. Now for the rears, you want to do: E5 DK BLU Right Rear Speaker Output (+) to F14 DK GRN Right Subwoofer Speaker Output (+) and E4 LT BLU Right Rear Speaker Output (-) to F13 LT BLU/BLK Right Subwoofer Speaker Output (-) and E6 BRN Left Rear Speaker Output (+) to F15 DK BLU/WHT Left Subwoofer Speaker Outlet (+) and E7 YEL Left Rear Speaker Output (-) to F16 LT GRN/BLK Left Subwoofer Speaker Outlet (-) (NOTE: This was all pulled from the Monsoon Pinout link I posted above.) At this point, you'll have 8 pairs of spliced wires (+/- for each of four channels). You can remove the amp and toss it in the trash, burn it, sell it on eBay, etc.) If you used a correct wiring harness to install the headunit, all of the outputs from the headunit are now directly connected to the door speakers and the rear deck woofers. You can now install any set of speakers you want, as long as they're meant to go in a car, and are 4-ohm (ie pretty much everything except Infinity Kappa). Good luck! |

Hey...i think I may have found a direct replacement...I googled "2 ohm 6x9" and came across a Soundstram speaker...it is a Triaxial 20h 6x9 with 4 leads. I think they are SPL 69 series.
I am pasting the link below...if I am out of line...I am sorry...just trying to help.. http://www.soundstream.com/manuals/s.../spl/69/69.PDF |
