Yup, another Rear Speaker question

Good Afternoon! I am new around here and am trying to help a friend.

A friend just bought some new rear speakers, and wants me to install them. I am not a dumbass, but I am definitely not the Audiophile. I started reading up because I assumed the 2001 Grand Am had a stock amp. My friend also wants an aftermarket amp in the future. My friend has the stock head unit. I started reading these posts’ and am a bit confused. I think my best bet would be to run new speaker wire from the rear speakers directly to the Stock Head Unit, but I am not sure which wires I need to splice into. AND can this even be done with the Stock HU or do I need to buy another harness? Any help is GREATLY appreciated Mr. Audiophiles

Thanks in advanced!

Anthony

nope you cant run new wire from the stcok head unit cuz it doesnt have an amp in it. your best bet is since he pans on amping his speakers would be to wait on installing these speakers and get a aftermarket deck. cuz then you can run new wire to the speakers and it'lll get the full range of sound and a little more power.

My friend is not the brightest when it comes to these things, so I doubt she will understand. I am sure she will just want the speakers installed without buying an after-market HU. Should I just wire them to her stock AMP then? If that is the case then I better go start re-reading all these posts on what to do, .

Thanks cardude for the fast reply.

ok your gonna have 2 leads that will come off the stock speaker. try each pair and hook up the pair that sounds best to the new speaker. one is only highs and one is mostly lows wth a lil mids. haha both kinda suck but oh well. if u need anything else dont be affraid to ask

I know in my eclipse I had to re-wire everything from my stock amp to my after-market HU. It seems all I need to do for my friend is to splice the rear speakers to the factor AMP as shown:
E4 LT BLU Right Rear Speaker Output (-)
E5 DK BLU Right Rear Speaker Output (+)
E6 BRN Left Rear Speaker Output (+)
E7 YEL Left Rear Speaker Output (-)

I just want to assure myself before I dork anything up. Thanks again!

Yeah, I am going to try and explain to her that an after-market HU is the way to go. I am not sure she will want to go that route. She likes the "stock" look, . I love my after-market HU

Thanks again cardude... I suppose I'll be taking it apart sometime this evening.

yup yup i love my aftermarket head unit as well. you dont have to spend a LOAD to get somethin nice either. if you can, try to get somethin for around 200, thats enough but it gets you into the nice stuff at least and out of the value models. check out some Pioneer and Alpines at best buy and circuit city then try to beat the price online somewhere if and aftermarket HU is what she will want to do.

-if she has an ipod, aftermarket HUs have awesome ipod hookups and arent too expensive either now a days; like 20-30 bucks. just thought id add that in there
good luck with everything and have fun with the back shelf, its almost as much fun taking out as putting back in

Haha, I was reading the crutchfield write-up on how to take it apart... it does seem like a pain. Oh well, it will be worth it in the end

Thanks again cardude... much appreciated!

The stock headunit puts out power just like any other aftermarket headunit, but doesn't put out the same amount of power that an aftermarket deck would.

If I were you, I'd try wiring the new speakers directly to the stock headunit (bypass the amp) and see how it sounds. You really have nothing to lose in trying, and if she's happy with the sound then it'll save her a few hundred bucks by not having to buy a new headunit.

do you have any actual numbers of what it would put out? and on a monsoon amp car, would the HU be powering any speakers?

I don't know the numbers, but I'm sure it's low. 10w maybe?

On the Monsoon systems, all four channels coming from the radio go directly to the amp, which boosts the signal and splits each channel into high and low, for a total of 8.

come on dude, if you had a stock deck and were getting some nice aftermarket speakers would u run them off the 10 watts that stock deck gives out? i wouldnt go thru all the bother of runnign new wire and splicing in just to get 10 watts. i'd hook em up to the monsoon amp.
it sounds like they want to do a little adding in the audio part of the car anyways with amping their speakers. so really might as well get the aftermarket head unit at the same time as these speakers so if they wish, they can run new wire right away.

For free, I would try it. On a set of efficient aftermarket speakers, it may be OK. At least he'll get full-range sound out of the speakers, which he WON'T get if he uses only half of the channels coming from the Monsoon.

If he can try it out for free, with minimal effort, then why not? I'm not saying it's gonna sound amazing, but you might be surprised how far 10 watts would get you. I've run '300 watt' Pioneer 6x9s off of stock 1986-ish GM headunits, probably putting out half of the power of the Monsoon deck, and they sounded OK.

And 10w was just a guess, it could be a bit more. Or less. Either way, it wouldn't hurt to try it.

Lorenzo2 Still kinda new, but learning
please don't do that! you'll blow stuff up. go to crutchfield.com and order a gmoss-04, i think thats what its called. i got one when i still had my stock hu and amp in but put in a 12 Ken. typhoon w/1200 wt. amp. and infinity 6x9s and it worked good. just fill in the necessary info for them,(make,model,etc....) and it should bring it up. i will warn you though, you might want to make sure you get the master sheet from them and turn up the volume on the warning chimes because it comes w/ them turned down really low. GOOD LUCK!!!

If he's just replacing the rear speakers, why does he need the harness?

My friend is buying an after-market HU to ensure everything is fine. I didn't know the stock hu would push any power out of it since it does have an amp, interesting for future references.
