Well run strong is a relative term here. Once we get the fuel delivery fixed it'll run, but its not exactly a street car right now. We need to get the distributor recurved as it currently is set to go into full advance past 2,000 rpm. That and the high duration cam grind he's got messes with the carburetor some. The one on the car uses vacuum for some function (I don't remember what) but with the current setup he's looking at only a few inches of vacuum at idle. Also at one point he had some block work done (I think just a hone job) and due to the problems he had after the work was done, the diagnosis is that they did the wrong finish for the rings that were installed.

Suffice it to say that its runnable, but there's still a LOT of basic engine work that needs to be done...

Sounds like time to buy a case of beer and get down to work on it.

I'd love to spend a summer like that,

I know its hindsight now, but you should of dropped the gas tank and cleaned it before putting fresh gas in. Twelve years of sitting old gas can really foul up a gas tank. That carb doesn't look to pretty either. It would be a good idea to take the top off it and check for dirt/gunk inside.

Good advice. I'll relay it to my dad. His memory concerning anything done on the car is much better than mine.

Update 6/25

Last week we figured out that the fuel pump was no good. This week we installed a new fuel pump and replaced a few lines...and she roared to life!

So we've finally gotten it started after more than a decade of sitting around. She ran quite well and had her characteristic "chugga chu chugga" of a cammed up motor. I took some video with my cellphone but you can barely hear the motor over all the wind noise . If someone knows of ways to clean it up I'd be happy to send the files. Otherwise it'll have to wait a while until I can get some higher quality video.

Soon we'll be bringing her home I can't wait!

Hurry up and get that thing striaght. I love the old GOAT's. Everytime I watch Tommy Boy, I melt when they show the car. Those things are "AWESOME"...

Sorry for the movie quote. Couldn't help it.

Here's some vid. Again this is hardly worth showing, but I figure maybe someone will get something out of it.

Id be worrying about how much rust is under all that dust.

Surprised it runs so good.

Surprisingly enough there isn't a whole lot of body damage and rust considering its age. Time will tell the tale but for certain but I've seen worse rust on much younger cars.

So I paid a visit to the Goat today with my dad. We drained out probably about 5 gallons worth of stale gasoline while the engine ran for a good while. Unfortunately this has put the spot light on another issue of concern, the alternator is deader than dog sh!t, the radiator is probably full of rust as we overheated the motor a little...not to mention the thing leaks under pressure. Also we suspect the float in the tank is stuck because before draining out the fuel the gauge read 1/2 and same after.

Lastly, we have another more pressing concern...people are talking about the car. Word has gotten around, even to the garbage men apparently, about the car being in the garage, and questions of sale are being asked... Unfortunately, publicity is the last thing we want, especially considering the condition of the garage its in. One of these days soon we're going to HAVE to bring it home for a while just to let everyone think its gone...

Nope. Oil was old, but still essentially unused from the last oil change.

Well, in the garage its in I think any neighborhood wouldn't be safe. Beyond that, there are much worse neighborhoods around. Its not as nice as it was when I was a kid, but if I had a family I would consider that neighborhood.
