What I mean by that is this ... say I'd like to have .050" more clearance than the advertized max lift, so if the heads are good for .500, maybe they're really good for .550" until coilbind. Now if someone installs a .530" cam, maybe there is technically clearance for this, but as for myself, i'd be nervous about the .020" remaining clearance. my bad about the piston to valve thing ... doh.

Just a hobby...

To be absolutely safe, has anyone thought to seize a set of lifters and check the piston/valve clearance with clay?

I have with the cam timed to see how close things got. 3.4 DOHC pistons and 1331 grind had plenty of clearance there (.200"+)

Ive decided today Im not going to put the cam in the car. Im going to build a motor instead!
The car isnt worth much, and Ive spent too much on it to make it worthwhile to sell. Its still my DD for now but will eventually become a second car. With that aside, here is what I have planned. 3400 block, stock crank, shot peened or cryo treated rods(stock) w/arp bolts, forged pistons w/ skirt and top coating @ 10:1 compression, ported 3500 heads, ported 3500 UIM & LIM, arp head studs, MLS head gasket, 36lb injectors, crank scraper, 1331 cam, comp cams 26986 valve springs. I plan on running 100 shot of nitrous in two stages, one wet one dry. As far as a transmission goes, I may build up the stocker, or possibly look into a 4t65hd swap with a couple minor things on it. All in all Id like to do this with about $5k. How feasible that is, I dont know. I need to find a bottom end from a 3400 and then some 3500 heads. After that Im gonna get a quote to see what its going to cost to put all of this together. I would also like some serious weight reduction on the car. At the track today with no back seat, passenger seat, or spare tire the car was 3020lbs. I think I could get it into the area of 2600-2700 without really hacking things apart and still in DD form.

I think moving would make a big difference. I was expecting my car to be heavier than it was.

I just ordered some more parts to get the build going. On Thursday, I picked up an engine stand to keep the motor on. Just a few minutes ago I bought ARP head studs, ARP rod bolts, a crank scraper, and some 3500 plenum spacers that will be plumbed with a DIRECT PORT NITROUS kit..... Im going to pick up a whole 3400 sometime this weekend and still need to find some 3500 heads and rockers.

I doubt you'll get the car down to 2600lbs. The lightest I've got mine in race trim is 2980 and that was with the back seat out and everything else out of the car. You'd have to strip the interior and replace every body panel possible with a light weight piece, and probably ditch the A/C too and who knows what else. Not gonna be very driver friendly after that.
The direct port nitrous sounds like a good idea, but I wouldn't plumb them into the plenum spacers. They aren't that thick and drilling holes in them will weaken them, and also you'd be shooting the nitrous/fuel in perpendicular to the air stream. The spacers would give you enough room though to plumb the system into the top of the runners on the LIM which would let you inject in the direction of air flow and give a stronger material to thread into. Also the O-ring design of the spacers will make it easy enough to remove the UIM quickly for jetting changes. Either that, or if you're using a 3500 upper you could put the jets in the top so they'd be pointing down directly over the ports in the lower. Not as much guarantee of equal distribution, but at the rpm where the system should be used and the air speed in the mani, the mix would probably get sucked straight down the ports.
