Broken OEM rim (pics)
So I just came back from the tire shop as I had dropped off the car to have fresh rubber put on all 4 corners. They called me up to inform me that I have some nice damage to one of my rims and that I should come down and look at it and tell them what to do as its really unsafe to continue using. Normally this would be a bad thing, but I see it as an excuse to get new rims
![]() So I put it to you my fellow GAGT'ers. If one rim was in bad enough shape to get cracked that badly, how likely do you think the rest could be that bad? Should I get rid of them and buy new AF rims (limited to stock size) or just buy a replacement OEM rim? Here are some pics I took with my phone when I got home. ![]() Damage ![]() Full rim ![]() Nice bend on it too Now me, personally, I suspect its because I hit this really nasty pothole on the way home from work (twice). It was so bad that it probably bottomed out the suspension on impact. That's how solid the hit felt both times, hence why I no longer drive on that lane. But is anyone else surprised that an OEM rim could crack like this?

![]() Its too bad the tires are already bought and paid for. Had I known this was going to happen I'd be looking into 17's with some nice hi-perf summer rubber, and some steelies with nice winter tires. Oh well...

Doesn't surprize me, I've seen damage like that on factory rims before. I'm sure it's due to the pothole, a hard enough hit will tear up most aluminum wheels like that. Sorry to hear about your wheel trouble.

That'll be for later. For the time being as I JUST got the new tires, any replacement rims will be a conservative 16"

^ what he said. No point in buying 16" AF wheels only to buy 17 or 18's later.
Find a cheep oem replacement for the time being.

Used rim it is. I'll ask my uncle who works at a body shop to start looking for one then. Figure it'll work out nicely seeing as how he'll have the car around his shop while the door gets fixed.

Does anyone think it could be the fault of the tire shop? Also at the moment the tire isn't holding air, which it was before. Thoughts?

you could call up the shop and explain the problem, but idk if they will do anything about it. if you are going to get af rims than definitely get 18's or it will just look silly.

Save the money, wear out the tires then get new rims. No sense spending more than you need to...

look at the break, is it a fresh? If it was that way before it would have dirt in the break area. I would find it hard to believe you could drive like that. How would the tire even hold air for 30 minutes? It could have been already cracked then when they put it onthe tire machince it broke out the rest of the way. If that were the case half the break would be dirty and have a few clean areas.

Man, there is no way you would be able to drive on that at all, that would just blow the bead right out. That break loosk fresh, Id say it may have been weak but was broken when he put the tire bar in to pry the tire from the bead, Ive seen it before.

Well whatever the case the tire still holds air even with that chunk missing. I would expect the break to be fresh as I just slammed into that pothole a few days ago. As for the location, I went to the Just Tires on Harlem and Forest Preserve ave, right across from the HIP.
But I just got a quote on a reconditioned rim... $275! And the things retail new for something like $600 Man, I swear if this ever happens again I'm gonna be pissed!
