GM used two different style keys for that period, the two sided ones and the one sided ones (that require a different ignition key). i know you cant cross those up, but either way, its strange that this works. ill have to try it sometime.

What's funny is, the media puts these stories out to educate people, but all it does is give unsuspecting theives new tricks and ways to break in. Awesome.

This is true about GM keys, but it's not just GM keys that open multiple GM car doors. I took a Saturn that I owned a couple years ago to my local shop and dropped the key in the key drop box. The next day I received a phone call asking if there was a trick to starting my car because the key didn't turn the car on. When I went there to try it they gave me a non-GM key (I don't remember the make). They were using someone else's key. It opened my door, but wouldn't start the car. What are the odds that a key for another car that was in for repairs would open my car's doors? Scary. Why is it again that GM put chips in the key of some GM cars?

what are the odds that a repair shop would use the wrong key on the wrong car?

Wow this is some old news. I should start taking the keys out the cars at the J/y before this gets around.

Eh... nothing new, Ford keys for sure and probably other brands, same deal. A paper clip bent a certain way works as well. Get an alarm and/or insurance.
