My car does the same thing 2000 grand am se. Its at the worst after it rains. After a few days of sun the noise lessens or goes away.

My sons car, 2001 Grand am ,had the same noise, the sound came from the main front pully,I think its the power steering pully, the guy at autozone suggested I replace the Tensioner pully assembly( the tensioner and pulley already asembled out of box) I was skeptical cause the sound was coming from a different pulley, but that was the problen NO SQUEAK, he said the belt was loose. It only took me 20 minutes to replace, just loosen tension from belt( they let you use their tensioner release bar) take belt off idler pulley, take rachet and remove old tensioner assembly ( ONE BOLT) reinstall new assebly ,use bar to bend tensioner forward to put belt back on idler pulley.....DONE.......hope that helps

My husband powerwashed the engine bay on my GA this weekend and now I have the same sound. It gets louder at higher speeds. I have a gatorbelt that has less than 5k on it. I'm thinking pulley not belt. My Dad is supposed to come look at it in the next couple of days. Maybe he can figure it out.

We thought that it had something to do with the belt getting wet. But, we drove about 300 miles back and forth to a show and it is still doing it.

My 1999 started to do the same thing after i took the idler pulley off inspecting it when i replaced the water pump. there is a sound differance between a sqeek and a sqealing belt. The pulley has a shank style bolt that you can put some grease on to help lub it up, but i wouldn't spray anything on the belt. lub the bolt or pick up a new one around 22.00 bucks and that will help you determine what the noise is, ie belt, pulley.

well it could be the belt or tensioner pully (idler pully).
best thing to do is get some spray from autozone or some place like that that stops belt sqeaking. and if that dosent stop check the idler pully and belt.

Used the spray and it actually got worse. The belt is a Gatorback that is just a couple months old. I guess I'll try the pulley.

i used the spray also but it made the noise worst and louder. i bought a mechanics stethascope to try and locate where the noise is coming from but i cant track the noise. im thinkin im just gonna replace all the pullies and the pully tensioner and a new belt... cause that squeaking is soooooooooooooo annoying and makes my car sound like a freakn bucket

UPDATE!!!!! today i fixed the squeak that has been driving me crazy... i couldnt track it down until i removed the belt and checked all pulleys which were all ok... took a second look at my belt and there was like a 3 inch cut in the middle of the belt that was causing that fcking squeak!!!! i would advice u guyz to change ur belt... i couldnt see the cut cause the belt was fairly new...

If the belt is okay, or it's been changed, I'd change the tensioner, I see many cars with that problem, the tensioner actually gets a lil loose which causes the annoying noise. Which is bad cuz the tensioners job is to keep a tension on the belt..

Also, I wouldnt use any lube on the belt, it can cause the belt to slip off if there isnt proper tension
