I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to the information regarding this "simple" fix for the 1,2 setting.
I just recently bought a 2000 SE and to much dismay, about a week after that the AC went. The dealer was too cheap to give me free fix after just dropping $8920 in cash (bastards), so I figured I woudln't let them charge me $50 bucks when the part is $23 bucks and I could do it myself. So thanks to all of you, I sucessfully fixed my air conditioning, took about an hr and half but the satisfaction of doing it myself cannot be beat. Thanks again. |

Just replaced mine today after dealing with settings 1 and 2 not working for a while, almost 9 months to be exact. Do not even try to cheat to get that back bolt out. You will just waste time and **** yourself off. Get a 1/4" universal and a 1/4" extension and you will have the job done in 30 - 45 mins.

Wow...just lost my 1-2 settings the other day. I hate taking my car to dealers since I love to do the work myself but didn't know where to start. Thanks for the info.......

I bought mine at from carquest and it was only $20.00. The new one was actually longer than the old because they changed the style since so many were breaking. My old one actually burnt itself and it was all melted when I took it out. I hear you can get the part cheaper from AC Delco though.

incase anyone needs to know for 1996-98 mine being a 98 . the resister is gm #22529265. this older ones don ' t look like a large computor chip , but like a lot of large coils like in a light bulb. paid with 15% tax 18.45 cdn. try put this older ones in between the engine and firewall... sharpe engine parts and as tight as the interior install ones on 1999 up cars. i folded my one and only hand ,you could use in positions it should not.. came close to getting it stuck. swelled up like a soft ball when finished scare up my forarm also. i am very thin small hands 154 lbs. while doing it extremely painfull and same afterthe job. and i had no small flexable socket. although i have tried to use those before and i can never get them to work . they don 't seem to work on a complete angle bend 90 degrees i think you call it . some tips on how to use flexable sockets would be great.... still better then paying what i would imagine a dealer would charge ... troy check the other HVAC thread to help me with the new problem.

re
I did mine last week. Again, the dealer had it on the shelf for the 25 bucks. I had a small ratchet with no universal, and with a little wiggling, it was in and out in about 20 minutes. Easy, except for the porno position that I had ti get in to reach it.
Seems as if they improved the design by putting that plastic coating around it. The old one was a corroded mess, and this looks as if the new version might be better. Thanks to you guys and this post, if I hadn't read these I would have never done it. I just thought my 1 and 2 not blowing was the product of poor design. Now it is as good as new. Thanks again. Now if I could get you all to be experts on struts, I'd have it licked. ![]() |

Finally!
Yes! I finally fixed the 1 & 2 HVAC settings, whew. It was a PITA to get that back screw off (and on) but I did it with time and effort. Thanks to all of you who posted earlier...I knew exactly what to do and it wasn't too much of a hassle.

But not only that sometimes the fan doesnt come on at all, then I have to pop the hood and smack the fan housing and viola it runs. Is the part still in the same place on a 93 GT

Well add me to the list also I noticed mine wasn't working on 1-2 today but works on 3-4-5 exactly one year ago today my headlight went out and I learned my lesson from working in 5-10 degree weather so I guess this isn't something that needs to be replaced right away so hopefully I can get by with using 3 for awhile atleast until the spring anyway. By the way I have just over 60k on her.

Blower resistor
Thanks for all the info Guys, but here is the problem. I have replaced the resistor and 1-4 fan settings still do not work! Could the switch itself be bad? Also I got ripped by the dealer $35.42 for the part. Any more help please let me know.

I had the blower resistor go on me about two years ago and had it replaced under warranty.
Now my blower is working intermittently. I removed the panel under the dashboard and when I jiggle the connector on the side of the blower motor the fan is coming on or off. It seems like I've got a loose or corroded connection to the motor. I pulled the blower motor out (not too hard, just the three screws) and cleaned up the male connector contacts on the side of the blower as best I could. Put it back in and it's still doing the same thing. I'm suspecting that maybe the female part of the connector is either loose or corroded. It's pretty impossible to clean it out while it's still under the dash. Anybody ever take that connector off of the wiring harness (can it be done without cutting the wires) or know a good way to clean the connector up while it's still in?? |

Well thanks for all the advice. The universal adapter saves allot of time. The other good item to have is a flexible flashlight. I also found my case interesting. When I went to replace mine in my 2000 Alero, the one installed was a replacement dated 10/02 rev2. It also only had one bolt, so the mechanic who replaced the first one must have gotten frustrated himself (The far one was missing.) The new revision is about an inch longer and the resisters (thermisters?) nearest to the socket are farther away. It looks like they may have actually spent some time to re-engineer the new one. Time will tell. I hope I get rid of the car before this one goes.

The new part number from the dealer on my grand am gt
I just changed mine today and at the dealer the new part number is 89018413 . Now all my fan speeds work and it was easy as hell to change,,took me 13 minutes. Thanks for the advice on this site.

Ok guys I still have not replaced mine I guess I am just used to starting the car right up now and turning it on 3 but now today when I was leaving for work I turned it on 3 and it started to make a crackling noise and it was definately comming from under the passenger compartment and after a few minutes I turned it off then turned it on again and now it sounds like something just isnt right with the fan now, it seems like something else is working or putting a load on something but I just can figure out what? I can still hear the crackling noise(almost like something is about to shortout) and I am just concerned about what that thing is that sounds like an extra load is being put on something? Also too that load thing is in the fan because when I turn it off I hear nothing. I just hope it last me until I get a 50+ degree day here so I can take a look at it. Any opinions?
