![]() A lot of recent threads have gone by about "I have an SES, now what???"
There are 2 reasons you will get an SES.. 1) Something mechanical in your car is broken. Noone can tell you what it is until you go to somewhere/someone with a code scanner. Autozone reads codes for free, and also don't forget your dealer for service... Everyone can try and guess if your car is showing some sort of symptoms. In general, when that SES pops on, you want to go get that code read immediately and take care of the problem before you do some damage. 2) You made a modification, and now the SES comes on all the time so you just ignore it. Some peoples CAI's trip these, other's exhaust does it, some with some engine work (coughKylecough) In general this is pretty bad because if you throw another code, you aren't going to know about it. Try and get the code cleared / repair whatever is possible to. If you can't avoid it, make it a regular habit to check trouble codes on your car so that you aren't missing anything. Just my take on the subject.. hopefully smarter people can add some info

Also I just found out if you clear a code by unplugging your battery (15 minutes) and reseting the PCM it doesn't really clear the code. The code will stay in the PCM and the SES light will pop back up in due time (not right away).
I learned this because everytime I got the SES light I would reset the PCM, by pulling the PCM fuse. The SES light would go away for a while; 50-100 miles or so and then reappear. I thought it was just a seperate occurance of the code. WELL, one day went to autozone to have it cleared and the kid with the scanner flipped a wig when he saw like 8 or 10 "Lean Bank One" codes stored in there. Just a little more info to add to the pile.

How long does the SES light stay on after the "loose gas cap" code is resolved...(I refilled gas since and made sure the cap was tight), oh BTW it was P0442(standard "evap leak") Because I know it turns itself off, just when does it though?

For god sakes... go get the code read and you'll find out. That's the whole point of the light coming on, to tell you what your problems are.

Bottom Line - Get the code read!
If you have a code, do a search for the code and read up on what others have done to fix it. Become familiar with what the repair may involve, maybe its something that a dealer should handle, maybe not. AFTER that, if you still have a question, post it up. ![]()

That means it cleared itself. It might be stored in history if you want to go get it read.
