1999 GA Key fob question

I have a 1999 Grand Am SE, and on the door jam it says Date: 04/99 So, since it's an earlier year G/A, would it be possible to do the whole jumper-wire thing in the trunk and program a couple key fobs? If so, will i need the 1999+ key fob, or the 1998 style? Or does it matter?

I am also looking for the answer to this question. According to the Factory Service Manual, you need a Tech 2 scanner. The internet is full of bad instructions on how to program these without a scanner. Having said that some OBDII scanners now do this, and even the Tech 2 scanner isn't that expensive any more.

I've never heard of this before. I thought all '99+ grand am's had electronic trunk releases. Should be a button on the driver side door by the map pocket. I thought they all had a button on the key fob too. I've never seen one that didn't.
