![]() Does anybody know if it's possible to drop a 3.8 s/c into a 2002 Grand Am? If so, what needs to be done to make it function like a 3.8 and not a typical garbage 3.4? I have heard so many different comments and ideas, I can't even understand whether this swap is actually possible.
If anybody has any input it would be greatly appreciated ![]() Thanks Cory M |

Yes it has been done, but you will be basically swapping the whole front end and I don't just mean the motor. By the time you finish you would have spent alot of time and money. If I had the money I would go with Milzys' stage 2 kit, also on Mikes site he is selling crate engines built the way you want. Here is the link http://www.milzymotorsports.com/miva...=MMS_Crate3400
I'm not in any way telling you not to do the swap, but I find it would be easier to do the Milzy crate motor built to your liking.

the point is, anything is possible with enough time and money... and yes, it has been done, but the fabrication and effort it would take to get it to bolt up and properly work really are not worth it. You'd be better off supercharging the 3.4, turbo charging the I4, or just starting with a whole new project all together depending on how fast you wanna go.

OK, hows this.
The only sucessful swap had to use the two PCM's in tandem so youll have a whole wiring harness nightmare on your hands. The guy who did this said that it took him a year to get the car to even run. Im sure you dont have that kind of time on your hands nor the experience if you have to come in and ask if its possible. If you do it youll be a pioneer, nobody is going to hold your hand along the way. Thats the harsh reality and why everyone gets pissy when this question gets asked over and over because the answer is always the same. The 3400 is capable of out-performing the 3800 with FAR less work with a turbocharger and some other engine upgrades. Youll find information and parts on WOT-Tech and Milzys site. Just an FYI Mike takes foreeeeever to get things done, all of those kits have been 'in development' for a long time.

Don't you mean the other way around? What needs to be done to make a garbage 3.8 function like the much better designed and more advanced 3.4?

Seriously. My friend had a 99 GTP and, don't get me wrong it was fast and had power, but when that motor is in a boat like a Grand Prix its not that impressive. (Back in the 60s Dodge put 440s in Monacos and 383s Superbees. Doesn't mean a Monaco will outrun a Superbee.) That 3.8 wasn't that impressive anyway and if it ever came down to it, I don't think that Grand Prix would have been faster than my Grand AM.

The L67 swap in an N-body is chock full of fail. Goddamned nubcakes, stop having pipe dreams about putting this overrated motor in a GA.

While your at it why not make it rear engined RWD... that wouldn't be pointless either.
