New Paint + General Car Care Tips
OK, im being torn between being told that since i have a nearly month old paint job on my hood, i should take it of during the winter. and i've also been told that the paint is almost a month old and it should be fine during/after winter with all of our sand and salt. now who know the real deal?? i don't want the hood to be crap after winter but then im told it won't be...anyone ELSE have some insight on this??? It would be much appreciated

If your painter was even remotely decent then there should be no issue. It's not like automakers stop making cars or shipping them during the winter because of the weather right?
Just make sure not to leave sand and salt on the car too long as it would cause damage regardless... |

Do some searching over on http://www.autopia.org
They've discussed alot about new paint and protecting it as well as what products are best to apply to it and when. Some very good info on there. |

now if i say it was my father and he did what any other paint person would do (bake it and whatever they do) does that immediately tell me "no not to leave it on during winter"?

Just keep it clean. The longer the salt stays on, the worse it is. Paint needs up to a month to fully cure, but you should be fine now.

I don't know...for the most part waxing shouldn't be done until paint is fully cured.

I take my SD hood off for the winter. It prevents crap coming in the scoops, paint chips and much less deer damage.
My stock hood has a dent over the headlight from a fawn. |

Ok i gotta step in here and tell you what i know about this subject.
Your paint is litteraly out-gased within days. Most body shops will tell you 30-90 days just to be on the safe side, not really sure why, no one does. You can go ahead and wax it right now. I highly recomend either race glaze (acrylic sealant) topped with a nuaba (megs#26 would be best). You can get Long Hual sealant from big lots for $5 a bottle since long hual is going out of buisness. Race Glaze and Long Hual is the EXACT SAME PRODUCT.....literaly. I can explian why but wont bother if no one cares. Race Glaze is *about* $13.99 so i recomend finding a big lots. Taking your hood of for winter is just kinda a headache, i wouldnt bother. So at the last minute before winter i would Clay bar the whole car Apply Race Glaze/Long Hual Apply #26 or any nuaba right over it Then stand back and drool becuase you wont see it look that great again till you do this same process in the spring. Long Hual and Race Glaze are also GREAT on windows, rims, headlights/tail lights, basicly any chrome or stainless or aluminum. And Katie, auotpia.org can help you with anything related to paint of any kind and for any reason.

I'm asking how long it should take for a wash and wax, as described above where coupe posted, provided you want to make sure you do a good job. Heck, some people could spend hours longer than they should on it, if they are not used to doing it or unsure of what they are doing. EDIT: Oh yeah, and damn you people and your garages >< I have to park under a tree that's next to my driveway and takes up most of my front yard ![]() |

There is no telling how long it would take for a wash in wax. For *me* it takes about 3 hours and thats provided the fact i dont need to clay. I would say for a wash, clay and wax +2 i would plan on 5-6 hours if this is something you dont do often.

1) I just meant garages are nice for your car in general ![]() 2) WHen you do a wax, do you need direct sunlight to see properly? or can shade be fine? 3) I can just take it to the parkinglot at the park across my street (neighborhood street, and a 3 second drive ![]() If you guys have any tips for waxing and such, let me know. I'll be using the Search feature in a moment as well. ![]() PS - Just in case you weren't sure, Bouchie, my 'WTF' in reply wasn't to be mean ![]() |
