Rear window shattered!!!

Came out this morning to goto work and noticed my rear window was shattered. There was no rocks or tree limbs laying around and I cant figure out where the "spiderwebbing" started from. I have the rear window tinted so it looks like nothing is wrong with the window til you actually get in the car.

I don't see any signs that the window was hit by anything, could it be possible for it to shatter unexpectedly by itself?

This has happened twice to me. Wake up in the morning, go to get in car to head somewhere and rear window is shattered. Took me awhile but I figured out what did it. I thought the same thing about the temperature, rocks, tree branch, but it wasn't. Some glass had fallen in my back seat and when I knocked the rest out more fell, when I was cleaning the glass out of the back seat I found a small silver ball, or what I know as a BB. Some kids had been rideing around shooting BB guns at car windows. Happened to other people in my neighborhood at different times and I had to tell them also what it was.

So thats my theory, might not be lucky and find the BB, could of bounced anywhere, but thats what i think happened if no foriegn objects are around. Especially if the window is the one closest to the street, they just ride by and shoot.

Yes it is possible for it to shatter unexpectedly by itself. It happened to me once with my Lincoln..

I have been having problems with a neighbor the past couple days, but nothing as serious as him vandalizing my car, that was original thought but the more and more I look at the window there is no spot of impact where the cracking started from. no chip, no imprint of a rock, hand, stick, BB, nothing. This may sound funny but could Bass have an effect on it? 2 days ago, I had the subs hittin' really hard with a Bass diagnostic cd with the windows up, could that have weakened it and make it shatter 2 days later?

a BB is the size of 1 shard of glass, if it broke into those small pieces like mine (breakaway glass) so no point of inpact would be seen. As for installation, i forget how much it was seriously. A friend of mine had his front window redone and the guy just came out to the house and installed it in about 30mins. So doubt that much.

the window is still in its same position before it was broken. my rear window is tinted so the glass didn't move anywhere just is all "spiderwebed". I went over that glass with for about 20 minutes and there is no holes or chips anywhere on the outside of the glass.

I am getting it repaired at work tomorrow. The guy is coming out to do the job, $250 for window plus install. Not bad, called the dealership; $275 glass, $150 install.

Most GM parts are POS. That could be what it is. As much as I love my car, I hate it at the same time because of all the problems that I have had with it.

Yes, a BB can certainly break windows >>

Back in 7th grade, my buddy and I actually thought it would be funny to shoot the neighbors Brand new Suburbans back window with my bb gun. When my buddy shot the window, it all spider webbed up instally then about 20 seconds later it just shattered. BB GUNS are notorious for doing this. Not to mention we got in DEEP **** for it. Definately not a "funny" idea. We were young and stupid, but I've had first hand experience with this stuff. THey will DEFINATELY break a car window! No Doubt!

Always have full glass coverage on your insurance!! it's cheap !! saved my a$$ a few times.. I came out of my apt. and ALL of the glass was smashed out.
Someone took out their anger at my upstairs neighbor on MY BABY!!! I have pic but not scanned.. it was a mess.. all but the rear had to be replaced.

Got the window fixed yesterday here at work, pretty cool that they come to you and fix it. When everyone replaced their back window, did you have to replace the rubber/plastic piece that was around the window?

When I was little, me and my friends were a bad little crew. We would go around looking for old spark plugs and break off the little ceramic/white part off the spark plug into little little pieces and pluck the pieces at the parked cars in the neighborhoods we didn't like, that little piece of spark plug would shatter a window like it was a 5 pound rock hitting it. I guess I getting paid back for all the dumb stuff I did when I was little.

Could have been a glass punch (like a spring loaded screw driver) or even the edge of a flat head screw driver can do it. I can do it with a spark plug using no force at all. We always break the windows before extricating any of the victims at an accident scene and it is super easy to break a back window and it only falls apart once you push on it.
