I have an idea. Has anyone thought of asking him to make some carbon fiber covers for the B-pillar panels. Now that would be sweet. Probably cheap and easy too.

Hey guys, I was trying to catch up on all this.

I don't know if there was PM'ing going on but are you guys talking about ME doing other piece when you refer to "HIM"

I'm just lost I guess.

Anyway... first Alero hood is done. Ill have pics of it tomorrow.

I can do whatever you guys need now. If someone ha a donor hood we are all good to go for a pinned 100% CF hood for $600 + $100 shipping (with the possibility of hinges for some extra $$)

well, if anybody wants to be able to use hinges and pay only $550, send me a PM so I can get back to my guy. I'm not saying one is better or worse, but one IS less expensive. I have to get back to this guy soon, so please, anybody who is interested, PM me.

Just out of curiosity from this side of the deal did you get any specs on their hood?

Again, I am using:

20 oz carbon fiber
nomex core
epoxy (not resin)
vacuum bagging

doesn't the vavuum bagging allow the epoxy to be strained through the carbon evenly?

so yeah i'd be curious as what the other guy is using in his products...

I'd personally want what's the best available and most durable... I don't want something to chip or burst under mild pressure

SpyhunteR, essentially you in the right direction. It mainly strains the excess epoxy out.

If you have too much CF then it is flimsy, if you have too much epoxy then it is too brittle.

Final pics of finish Alero hood are at: http://home.attbi.com/~sparksm1/alero/alero2.html

John is getting it soon (shipping on Friday I hope) and let me know when you guys want to do the same.

I can take orders whenever...

SpyhunteR PM me if you like so I can excheange contact info for more info if you like.

I have emailed my guy and I will let everybody know what he says. Sparks, you say the hinged hood only weighs 12.5 lbs?? That's amazing...way better than I had expected. How much would that one (hinged) cost?

That specific hood is being sold for $800 shipped.

Hood pinned only are going for $700 shipped or $600 for local people that can pick it up.

I haven't got word yet on the materials/process used, but I do have some facts to compare. (both are cost for the hinged hood)

Option 1, Kenny
Carbon w/Fiberglass underframe: $550
Weight: approx 18 lbs
Materials: unknown at this point (shouldn't be judged on this yet)
Pros: Costs $150 LESS
Cons: Weighs 5.5 pounds more, not 100% CF

My take on Opt. 1: Not 100% CF, but it only adds 5.5 pounds in weight. As a reference, your floormats probably weigh 5 lbs. Is 5.5 pounds worth $150??

Option 2, Sparks
100% Carbon Fiber: $700
Weight: approx 12.5 lbs
Materials: High quality CF, High quality Resin
Pros: Top quality materials. Ultra-light weight
Cons: Costs $150 MORE

My take on Opt. 2: Unbeatable quality, while it's not much of a difference, it does weigh less and that's what some people want. It is 100% carbon fiber, which is also what some people are looking for.
