All I know is, I just put on Doctor Speed's stage 2 WAI, and there is a definite difference over the airbox, more pull. I love it. I've also got a cone heat shield, so that might be helping some.

Just because butt dyno says so huh?
tell ya what take your car to a dyno and run both set ups then take it to the track and run both

Why does extra pipe hurt performance if its pulling fesh air in?

I have a warm air intake with a 12" cone right next to my open hood vent with a heat shield under the cone....I think its about perfect

the longer pipe can actually help produce more torque
its kinda like long tube headers vs. shorty headers

I dunno......I'm kinda enjoying it. I thought this controversy was dead and buried!

I think I'll stick with my CAI. I put my stock box back on for the winter and I noticed a difference for the worse on the highway. I don't notice any difference with the low end at all, but I don't use the stock MAF with the CAI anymore either so I probably wouldn't.

Can't wait for Spring.

If ya get a Cold Air it may be a good idea to get an aftermarket MAF CA calibrated. That way you gain that torque right back but keep the awesome top end that the CAI gives ya. IMO by physics i would think the CAI is better than WAI.

Its not just temperature. Its flow capacity and flow velocity. Yes colder air is better, but less resistance and better flow is also better. Either was compared to the stock box both should be way better...I opened up the resonator part of my air box and it sucks in air like crazy..the filter gets dirtier there than from the ram air, so I'd say the stock setup chokes the engine.

CAI either long tube or WAI with some sort of box is best, then WAI, then stock. I personally like the box..they are easy to build and I bet the temp difference when done right isn't much. Easier filter access would more than make up for it. Its just more of a pain to install.

As far as the MAF goes...a "calibrated" MAF just changes the signal to the ECM/PCM fooling it into thinking there is more air(thus the PCM gives it more fuel). All the MAF does is measure airflow(g/sec). On cars where you can tune the parameters(burn a chip) you typically change it there(voltage to flowrate)...the MAF voltage is the variable..I guess on the GA, since we don't have much in the way of custom tunes you'd have to change the MAF signal. I guess I am curious as to how the calibrated MAF's change the signal..if they just bump the voltage a bit..there might be much cheaper way than buying a new MAF for $250+. A simple circuit boosting the voltage would do it.

I want to know about the fuel economy advantage of a CAI. Also, if a cone is better placed in a shorter distance, what is stopping my from shoving a cone in my airbox and closing it. Isn't that good enough.

Does anybody have a picture of a WAI with a box? This thread has finally got my modivated to do some kind of intake setup on my GA, and I'll probably go WAI with some type of cover to help with the heat soak. I'd appreciate it.

exactly

my cai was not that impressive, besides it's looks, until I added a Pro-M maf calibrated for CAI's. Then the difference was night and day

go to http://pfyc.com and click grand prix, then click UNDER THE HOOD, they sell a cold air box, its quite pricey, i recommend building your own out of lexan and 3 inch pcv pvc? whatever it is rubber tubing into the box, and if you want a vent on top of the box to let any heat that does get in exi while the fresh air is "rammed" into the box...

lexan is expensive, sorta, aluminum works well too as it doesn't absorb heat... if i wasn't so lazy i'da built this 3 months ago ...

Nice

I am moving my Maf this weekend. I have it one link away from the TB. It really needs to be right next to the TB. Too damn cold to do it now

Yeah mine is already butted up against the TB (stock one that is) so thats where im putting the Pro-M one. Im also thinking about cutting a hole in the tube closest to the cone as i can get and move the iat sensor down there.

You can build the box out of PolyPropylene 5 (PP 5). Several inexpensive products are made out of this (Wastepaper baskets, storage bins etc). PP5 has a higher heat resistance(continuous exposure is like 180 degrees) that PVC or lexan. It is quite chemical resistant (they make battery cases out of it. You could just use some type of sticky rubber insulation (home depot) between two layers. I haven't done this to my GA yet, but I did it to my firebird. It keeps the corner where the cone is cold...by touch I can't tell the difference between the insulated box and the outside.

I would definately recommend one of the intake suppliers on here APOC or DoctorSpeed the both have good reputations. I wouldn't recommend using PVC for the tubing--I have heard from some people who used it on camaros/firebirds that it can break down over time, esp with temperature changes it can be come fairly brittle--not to mention the aluminum tubing looks much nicer.

so does shoving a cone filter in the airbox and closing the lid offer any sort of advantage at all
