here's an email i just got back from Raybestos, seems like we will have some good upgrades in the future.

Thank you for your inquiry. The project is in the infant stages, but we have given strong consideration to offering our High Performance friction material (Blue Plate Special) for your segment of the market. Of course, we (Stoney Automotive Engineering and Raybestos Powertrain) are still going to be looking for ways to improve the capacity of the 4T45E. This includes clutch pack, hydraulic, and hard part improvements. I will send an e-mail to all who have inquired, announcing the release of the friction plates.

A recent conversation with Chris resulted in the following : ....

Patrick,

We are going to launch a blue plate friction plate package later this
summer for the 4T40/45Es. I need to emphasize that the friction plates
alone will not make the unit indestructible. The unit is only as strong
as its weakest link. In addition, GM Racing will be getting the
4T40/45E program off the ground soon. Vehicle testing will pinpoint the
areas in need of improvement.

I don't really have a good answer for you. I am guessing it would
likely be a hard part such as a shaft, planetary assembly, or one way
clutch.

Glad to hear it. I'll probably need it if I am going to put that turbo to its fullest advantage. Who is going to carry these kits?

3rd clutchpack...
-----------I could still spin tires in 1st and lay rubber, but 3rd sucked, killing MPG/Highway Acceleration/Overall acceleration/OD would not land quickly either...

I have that "unit" still and look to swap the clutchpacks in it with the Raybestos spec plates and install.

In the begin of this thread someone brought up Pro-Tech Performance Transmissions. Has anyone ever had any work done by these guy's. If so how would you rate your experience.

Ghost, just know this... there are no performance parts for our trans - 4t45e. Any rebuild will MOST LIKELY be to OEM spec. Many a performance shop will tell you that they will do this and that, but they would have to custom fabricate all the parts for you/us.

The TC can be done, but what we need are the packs/bands/valve body. No one has done that. Speak with Pro-tech, I found them very friendly and respectful of my questions on the phone about 8 months ago. They may be the best bet right now. At the time they mentioned that an employee at the shop was building a 4t45e for his 2000 Grand Am GT. See if they can verify that, let that be their first test for honesty.

Here's one for you....

How long would it take to install the friction plates?

I got a quote today for about $800, seems a bit high for around here because that should be about 16 hrs of labor.

16 hours of labor???? WTF!?!?!?

I completely tore down and rebuilt a 700R4 in 8 hours and that included driving to the local trans shop to get the old bushing pressed out!

If all you are doing is swapping the clutch packs, it shouldn't be more than a full day's work.

Anything new on the development of this product? This would be my next purchase if it were to become available. Please keep on these guys about an upgrade for our 4T45E's!

OK ... if that includes removal and a re-install, that is more like it. I was thinking just for a rebuild ...

UPDATE!

I just got an email from Chris Horback yesterday at it reads:

It looks like some progress is being made guys. Hopefully before long we'll be driving around with a stronger drive train...

We need to stay on these guys to let them know that we are really interested in these parts. So if you sent them an email....send them another one and if you haven't sent them one then get your ass in gear (no pun intended) and do so. Keep the pressure on so we can get these parts developed for our poor 4t45's.

I don't know about this particular place, but Domestic Performance will have kits. Right now they sell the limited slips seperately along with complete rebuilds.

I was told that he'll have a more expanded version as soon as he can get all the pricing together.
