im a year ahead of even the ap calc students right now. i finished ap calc last year as a junior. i dont have a math this year in school because there is nothing above ap calc. calc 4 is the next step for me ... but i opted not to take it in the fall and im kicking myself for it now. i have another friend who took it and said it isnt that hard. like goblue stated ... as long as you're not afriad to ask questions you should be ok.

OU is notorious for ****ty calc classes...and for good reason. If you think OU is like Macomb, to take a breather in your summer classes, think again. A majority of the reason is the teachers...they blow. I actually had good ones for Discrete Math and Linear Algebra, but they're all bad for Calc.

Also Tom, I'm not so sure they're going to let you take what you want without passing the AP test. I passed and even then I could only start with Calc 2. OU's math goes like this:

Calc 1, Calc 2, Advanced Calc 1, Advanced Calc 2 (300-levels mostly for math majors), and Differential Equations. To think you can just go ahead and register for Adv. Calc 2 (Calc 4 as you put it), I don't think you're going to be allowed. And I've never heard of Calc 5

you might want to ask your buddy if he was forced to take placement test when he was there. Because they do not let you skip out on much. I did the AP thing for english and they let me out of one class which sucked.

As for the math program, Jason is right it blows. I just went to OCC and took my math classes because they were pass fail. Plus the teachers over there can put into normal english so you can understand it.

yea ive heard stories about a japanese professor at OU that can barely speak english.

im not sure about the placement testing. 5 is the highest you can get on an AP examination, so i guess they took that as a good enough source to go off of. ill ask my buddy next time i see him.

notsoaveragejoe, i tutor no one unless its for rediculous amounts of money. i seldom study or do my own hw anymore. btw, are you a senior or junior?

i got a 4 on my AP test and was able to get 4 credits for Calc 1 and skip into Calc 2, no placement test.

i got a 4 on AP English and they gave me 4 credits for Rhetoric 150, and didn't force me to take 151 - so i never had to take a college class that was purely about writing papers. thank god.

it must be nice being one of those people who were born smart...

I'm a senior at NDP... I had to take Algebra 1/2 my freshman year at NDP because my middle school math program was a bad joke, and no one really learned anything. Needless to say im in honors pre-calc right now.

PS - are there any pre-reqs for that dual business/engineering program you mentioned at State?

tom i think the placement test is just to determine whether you start in pre-calc or calc 1. i'm not sure if there's any other tests. i would call and find out...also, they often sound very strict on what they allow and don't allow, but usually if you go to them separately or bitch about something enough, they'll cave in and give you what you want.

I feel stupid now....

I'm horrible at math. Sucked at it all thru high school. Good in the other subjects though like science, english, and history. Too bad I never had a chance to go to college, but it all sounds very confusing to me. But hey, I can fix my own car instead of paying someone else to do it.

I'm with you Aaron, I couldn't pass those math classes to save my life. I was good with English, History and even some of the sciences, but math for me was like trying to read an unknown foreign language.

Everybody has a teacher like that. I had a social studies teacher my sophomore year that took immediate disliking to me. Treated me like dirt and was failing me even though I turned in every assignment. He basically didn't like that my world view disagreed with his so he found reasons to grade me down. He even gave me an F on an opinion piece he asked us to write. Everyone knows you can't get an F for that because it's subjective... it's my opinion. Anyway after a couple weeks I went to my counseler and ask to switch to a different class. She said it was too late to do that. She eventually did it when I said I wouldn't go back to his class and threatened to get my parents involved. After passing the first symester with a B+, I went back and asked her if she still thought the first teacher wasn't failing me intentionally. Never would admit it though...
