Question Remote Car Starters

Canadian Tire has a great deal on for a remote control car starter.

Pro Start Car Starter $49.99

I was wondering if I will have any problems installing this on my 2001 Grand AM SE2.

I would really like to get this for the winter, and it's currently half price.

Thanks guys!

I was gonna get one last year but when I got the quote it was like $350.00 installed. Apparently my car has some sort of different relay or something that you need to work because of the way the car starts up with the high beams.

I will be installing the starter myself.

I just wanted to know if there were any problems to expect. I do know my electronics quite well, and I don't anticipate wiring issues, just so long as no grand am specific problem surfaces..

Any thoughts?

If you don't install a bypass module for the anti-theft then your remote starter will start the car but then the PCM will shut down the engine thinking the car is being stolen.

As for the drl relay you mentioned, I can't see that as being a problem since GM cars have had drl since the 1990 model year (in Canada.)

Are there any guides/docs on this site or any other that will explain the bypass procedure? I was thinking that there had to be something with the theft-lock system...

I just had Code Alarms remote start put on my 01 GAGT yesterday and I love it. If you install it you will need the DEI 555L or DEI 555T Passlock bypass module.

I think it has to be 555L, at least thats what i was told. The 555L is an updated 555T.

Does anyone know of any Canadian stores that sell this part?

Thanks!

I'm sure anyone that does remote starter installs would carry the part. Wacky's, Future Shop etc.

the 555L is a learning module and a 555T is one that is trained by putting in the codes that are needed. Everything works on mine now and i'm going to love winter and starting my car from my warm house.

i looked into that too..but that system only comes with 1 remote...and frankly, i got this nice compustar 1wam-s system (1way) for 107 tax included from a local dealer here in calgary. this system is top notch unlike the canadian tire stuff. i got this for my dads car, but i installed a few starters into a grand am, u will need a bypass module, most places should sell these. my dads car had one of those cheaper starters installed in it and it fried, so i got him a better compustar, and for 100 bucks its a steal!

ohh and here are some bypasses for our cars...i am not sure if both of these support passlock 2 (what grand am have) but you would have to check...and this is at canadaian tire

I payed $85 for mine plus $25 for the bypass module and it came with 2 remotes, lifetime warranty and Circuit city will take it out for free and install it into whatever I get next for free.

I had one installed on my wifes 99 GAGT in October. It cost around $220.00. I remember them saying that they needed a pass lock. I had them use our regular remotes because I wanted to retain the remote trunk open feature that their remote wouldnt have included. To start the car we have to press "lock" "lock" then the car starts and runs about 20 minutes.
The GAGT allows the use of the remote even after it's started so you can unlock the car by remote while it's warming up and then, if your confident that you can do it without screwing it up, you can insert your key and turn it to the "on" position and drive away. I have not told my wife about this because I worry that she may accidentally over rotate the key and grind the starter. If you step on the brake it will shut off.

When my alarm was installed they needed to get an extra relay for something, the guy had to run to the store and buy it because they were out. Forgot to charge me to . Sorry i dont remember what it was for. I dont know if it was for one of the features on my alarm or the autostart (Viper 791XV Responder).

aftermarket alarms/starters have 0 standards it seems, some alarm send out positive signals, other negative signals, other alternate, some do both, so the only way to tell if you need any more relays is to look at the manual and see what signal is send out...then match it with the correct wire in the car, check the cars signal...if they are different, u need a relay, if they are the same, no relay

and if u are doing doors as well..u will need a 1.5kohm resistor

I found this site to be helpfull when I installed a remote starter in my Malibu. Tells you all the wires you need to find, where to find them, and what color they are. I just got my Grand Am at the begining of the month and had a local shop install an OmegaMax-e alarm/remote starter. Cost me $300, but it's a full alarm system with remote start, and a two-way LCD pager keychain.
