I like domestic cars... I sure wouldn't buy one new again nowadays, I don't care who makes it or what it is. I magaine buying a new Cobalt/GTO/G6 etc... then a year later someone has one exactly like yours with less miles and they paid 5K less than you. ![]() Last edited by Mike3800; 01-04-2005 at 09:58 AM. |

IMO....I think the Cobalt SS is a great step in the right direction.....esp. when you look at what great cars companies are making for competition. I'm not excited at all about the 4 door BUT then again....how many of the compacts out there look very good in a 4 door?.? Most don't and I know as far as the styling goes...the Cobalt SS looks the part. I think they should have attempted a turbo on it...but a SC is fine. Most people will leave them stock I am sure....but hopefully there will be some nice aftermarket support for a few bolt ons. Hopefully the 4 door will have a similar pkg. a year down the road....
Again.....turbos being much more "current"....that would have helped the car's image....but either way. If you listen to magazines at all......Road & Track preferred the Ion Redline to the SRT-4......if I remember correctly.(Dont quote me) They kept saying that the SRT was more of the factory hot-rod...but the Ion Redline was more of a small, better rounded sports car with better feel and handling....kind of like the Mazdaspeed Protege. TO each his own on this one......I'm just glad that GM finally decided that if they didnt do something....they would die in that part of the market. Check out this months Motor Trend too......a great sport compact comparo. CHRIS ![]()

Ok the stock blower on the SS and Ion redline is not maxxed out. You can throw a smaller pulley on it and gain power once an aftermarket pcm comes out. The stock pcm from what i have been reading starts venting boost once you hit a certain point. We will say 12 lbs on the ss for example. Once you hit that mark the boost bypass on the eaton opens and keeps it at 12 lbs. If you throw a smaller pulley on there you will get to 12 lbs earlier but still max out at 12. Now that is why you havnt seen any wicked redlines yet and thats why you wont see any wicked ss's out of the box. Now with a reprogrammed pcm you will see the full bennefit of the pulley. This blower is far from maxxed out yet. We are hoping that the cobalt pcm's are going to be out a hell of a lot sooner than the redline ones will. From what i have heard gm will also be getting into the aftermarket in a similar fasion to dodge on the neon. It should be interesting. I do think that 14.5@98 is nice but it should be more like 14.2 with a 98mph trap speed with a good launch.

Go hunt for the saab 93, 2.0 eco turbo... yum yum. That was a nice lil test drive, having 6 gears was cool too. I think they should have just dropped in the 2.0 turbo instead of a supercharged motor in those cars. They already had a 2.0 turbo eco laying around, and bigger turbos are always an easy upgrade possibility.

yes ... gm is going somewhat in the right direction i still feel they are slacking somewhat
sc are fun but turbo is better most if not all econo box "fast or quick" cars are turbo other then gm's if i had one of those things... the wing would come off.... water injection would go on same with a smaller pulley and a ecu thats if i had one (would have to be given to me or stupid cheap) |

I was critical of the cobalt when it frist was annouced But now that i have seen it in person. Its pretty Nice. Maybe the next replacement for the GA with im sure a much better aftermarket slap on a SC/Turbo... Seeing it would be a auto!! and be running decide power. Stock engine isnt that bad at 145, When the Civc is running 127. Not sure of the weight differance though.

I read an article that was showing how GM built a 500+ HP Cobalt for racing to show people the potential. It was turbocharged, and I think something like 90% of the parts were from their catalog. Why sell the car with an SC, when you have to switch over to a turbo to make the big power. And why order internals and what not from their catalog. And the cobalt is 10' high from the factory.
The SRT 4 comes with a turbo, built internals, and has pre-done "stages" to make the next steps easier. Some stock SRT-4's are running 13's, I venture to say I will see the Cobalt (updated cavalier) running High 14's Low 15's bone stock. I'm sure resale value will be doo doo butter to. The SRT-4 with Stage 2, and a couple other bolts on will Rape cobalt with options at same price. Bang for buck, SRT has a lot more aftermarket support right now. I guess only the future will tell. |
