Your rental was likley a mexican built Cavalier. I have heard horror stories like your experience with them. I have heard of doors not being shut all the way cause it was not assembled correctly and the door cannot close, this is on brand new cars comming into the dealership. Fortunatley mine was assembled here in the US. I have had no issues with mine so far.

My 2004 Cavalier is a nice car, it serves it's purpose as a beater/commuter very well. Great mileage, reliable and great pickup and in-expensive. Better than alot of old beat up cars I see running arount with parts falling off. The ONLY 4cly naturally aspirated economy car with an AUTOMATIC that I have ever driven that can lay rubbber froma dead stop WITHOUT brake torquing... and 30MPG mixed city and highway driving to boot. My job is 27 miles from my home, I need economy, I picked the right car for what I need.

With a sharp new look, a finely tuned rear-wheel-drive chassis and luxurious cabin, all the fresh Lexus IS range needs now is a high-performance flagship -and this week's mag has the pictures to prove it.

One thing which will set the IS500 apart will be economy. Engineers are focused on developing a motor which not only produces massive muscle, but also uses very little fuel when cruising.

The car will feature a 5.0-litre V8 boasting 400bhp. Insiders say it is a bored-out version of the 350bhp 4.6 unit destined for the bigger Lexus LS next year. Expect a sub-six-second 0-60mph sprint, with top speed limited to 155mph. Unveiled in production trim at the Geneva Motor Show last month, the all-new IS will go on sale in the UK later this year.

At launch, a 2.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2 diesel will be the only models available. Development of the V8 is ongoing, so it will not appear until 2006.

It seems to me Toyotas will no longer be underpowered. I stated some time ago that Toyota will start making more performance oriented vehicles or vehicles with powerful engines. Though this info is not confirmed, I do recall plans for a GT model of the IS, GS, and LS.

I already love the IS. But an IS with 5.0L and 400hp? Drool. That's an M3 fighter.

M3 challenger, AMG C-Class challenger, and more importantly a CTS-V challenger. This is one area where the Americans stood above the Japanese- the high performance variant. Looks like it will be short lived.

Now Lexus Joins The CC Fold

Watch out BMW - Lexus is getting roofless. The German firm might have thought its forthcoming 3-Series CC was going to have a monopoly in the folding hard-top compact executive market, but there's another new model on the way.

Pictures in this week's mag give the world its first glimpse of Lexus's new IS CC. Currently under top-secret development in Japan, the four-seater will also take on canvas-roofed rivals in the shape of Audi's A4 Cabrio and the Mercedes CLK.

Losing none of the saloon's style, the IS should offer exceptional refinement. The super-slim roof panels will help to maximise space inside, and leave a large luggage area when folded.

Sharing its mechanical parts with the saloon, the IS CC will come with a full range of engines. These will include a 2.5-litre V6 petrol and an all-new 175bhp 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel powerplant. While the petrol unit will be available with a six-speed automatic gearbox with sequential paddleshifters, the majority of IS variants are likely to have a manual transmission.

The standard saloon version of the IS was unveiled for the first time at March's Geneva Motor Show. With a sharp look and hi-tech underpinnings, it will pick up where its predecessor left off when it goes on sale late this year.

Breaking new ground for the firm, the folding hard-top version is unlikely to appear on price lists before 2007. Official details are being kept under wraps, but expect to see the new convertible in concept form at one of next year's major European motor shows.

That is looking hot. I actually like it more than the new 3-series. Good work, Toyota.

I'm still not sold on Lexus interiors. I hate the black/tan and black/white combo....they're lacking color and personality. At least the old IS had Black leather/suede interiors with blue or red pinstriping.....that looked nice.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Lexus launched its new BMW fighters, the IS models, introducing the V6-powered IS 250 and IS 350. But is there another IS that will punch the performance even higher?

Rumors from Japan point to a high-performance uber-IS powered by a modified 4.3-liter V8 producing 400 hp, but speculation also suggests a possible 3.5-liter hybrid with equal pulling power. At the same time, the German automotive press is going gaga over word that Lexus has registered the name “IS460”—suggesting the possibility of an even more powerful autobahner with a 4.6-liter V8 under the hood.

Recent photos from the Nürburgring show a disguised Lexus IS prototype with twin exhaust pipes, a hood vent and upturned trunk lid, all indicating this is the high-performance IS 430, if not the bolder IS 460.

I'd still take a Bimmer....esp the M3.

M3 is a classic with heritage. Toyota= lack of soul.

IMO, he's sorta right. The M3 has a sports car feel in a mid size coupe.....the IS looks a little too plush. It lost its edge, especially on the interior, in my opinion.

But the IS250/350 are not M3 competitors. That is what the IS460 will set out to do.

No...but I wouldnt consider it.....

I would look elsewhere.....I would get a G35 coupe and put a procharger on it and be done

I just have an issue with Toyota thats all......its the whole attitute that no matter how boring a product is....everyone always argues that their "quality" renders everything else obsolete. I hear all this, my Toyota is better than a Mercedes or BMW and all that american junk blah blah blah.
I think all the hype about their glorious quality even overshines the fact that Honda makes WAY more exciting things....but all you ever hear is Toyota Toyota Toyota.....Im getting sick of it..

I guess its all the Beige 4 cyl camrys with cheesy mousefur interiors, hubcaps, rear drums and HORRIBLE steering and wallowiness makes them better than everyone else.....
