i was thinking of going with 4 10s or 4 12s for the subs, i calculated that 4 12s plus an amp to support them all will come out just under $500.

I believe the install counts for a whole lot more than the speaker. For example, I have no doubts Munsen could have pulled 150's even with a cheapie sub in that wall. I'm also sure he could have hit relativly close to the DD score with any sub that has a stong motor.

Designing enclosures isn't very difficult. Designing the enclosure to the car, and maximizing output is what gets to be a pain. That's why you see cars loaded with concrete, massive reinforcements to avoid the structure from flexing, etc. Too many people look at these cars and say, "Wow, that sub is awesome.", when they should be giving the credit to the owner. They don't even understand that they wouldn't want the car as a daily driver. Sure it gets loud, but it sounds like ass. There is that select group that go for sql and get loud and sound descent, but you don't see them at the top nearly as often as those who go for the burpers.

That should be easy with the ref subs. You can usually score those for $50 authorized. If you can get 70% off, you should be able to get all 4 for just over a hundred. Don't bother going for anything better. Sure their better subs might sound a little better, but if you going for 4 subs you can't honestly say you are out for sound quality anyways.

I must be getting old. I used to go overboard when I was younger and I thought it sounded great, but in reality it was just a mid 40hz boomer. These days I'm actually considering to sell my single 12, that I havn't even used, and putting 2 8's in the rear deck IB.

i can see where you are coming from. but their higher quality subs also can take a bit more of a beating. and id rather have 4 high quality subs that take years to blow than 4 low quality that i can blow in a few months. if i upgrade then it will be my last sound upgrade for many years, so i might as well drop a few extra pennies.

im just not sure if i want 4 12s or 4 10s. then i need to figure out if im going to do a custom enclosure (fiberglass most likely) or not. the mounting will definitely be a big deal for this, but im going to keep it all in the trunk, nothing visible, because i just hate thieves like that. ive just never owned a 10 so i dont know if im gonna stick with 12s or go down a size to save on space a bit.

fwiw, i've seen the refs take a lot of abuse. 4 12's in a ga trunk and being stealth is gonna be a bitch. I am doing a stealth setup myself, but I may have to raise the floor due to the space the amps take up. And do a custom enclosure no matter what. The majority of prefabs aren't that great, and usually not that solid.

im definitely doing two above the wheel wells, custom enclosure. just gotta figure out where to put the other two. the amp will probably be mounted on the back of the seat, i like the accessibility that provides.

Try and keep them all facing the same direction or you'll get some funky response issues. If you really want to go stealth then use whatever infinity sub that needs the least amount of enclosure volume. Polyfil will help out a lot. If you use a stuffing ratio of 1.5-1.75lbs/cuft you can use an enclosure 75% smaller than required for a specific Q alignment and get the same response.

hm, alright. what about a custom enclosure in a crescent shape facing out towards the trunk? how would that work as far as response?

That's probably the best you're going to do in a ga trunk.

This is the kind of thread that gets locked/deleted on a car audio/mobile electronics forum.

I didn't read through the whole thing, I apologise; but honestly if the original post and topic title were posted somewhere like say the SoundDomain forums? You'd see the thread locked or deleted before you even got 3 replies.

There are many subs that are regarded to be fairly high end/top level (JL W7, ID IDMAX, and several others) but there is no simple end-all, be-all "best". I'm sure someone must have stated this already...

Anyway here is a link to a impartial test done at ICIX Forums by elemental Designs. (Yes eD is a subwoofer company but the test actually did not involve any subs from them so I think it is safe to say it is imparital.) I believe the testing was done with enclosures recommended by the manufacturer of each sub; and they tested in both sealed and vented application.

why didnt they try more woofers than that? that seems kinda dump. they should have tried atleast 10 woofers.
also ebay was just a suggestion you probley can get things cheaper @ cc. all im saying is that there is better stuff out there, if you are really willing to spend a few extra pennys.

because we are allowed to express our personal opinion on which subwoofer is the best in our eyes, which is why this thread is still open most likely

but we all know the 10w7 is the best anyways
