Woo Hoo! Tranny is Slipping!

I've never been so happy to hear the technician at my dealer tell me my tranny is slipping. I got the service department to agree to let me drive one of the tech's around in my car to demonstrate the shuttering I had been experiencing for the last 5K miles or so.

I had it in once before, but they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and it wasn't throwing any codes so there was nothing they could do at that point.

Today went perfectly.

We left the dealer and the first time around the corner, I was able to reproduce the shudder and the tech said, "that's not right". I did it a couple more times for him as he read his ODBII computer that was plugged in. He said it was definitely slipping but it was throwing no codes. He forced it into first gear and it did it even more so.

End result is the car goes in Monday after work for tranny work. I am just still under warranty (55K now on a 60K warranty). I can't get another car from them until Tuesday sometime so I'll be car-less for a bit, but it'll be worth it after it's all said and done.

The tech said mine was probably a pressure issue. Best way for me to reproduce it was to be going up hill (apparently this matters, cuz the tech asked me if it did it moreso then), rolling ~10 mph, then feather it to ~3/4 throttle. This keeps it from shifiting down into first gear, but is an aggressive acceleration.

The car will start to accelerate, then ~2 -2.5K rpms the car will stop accelerating, the rpms will hold, the car will shake, then ~1 second after it will release and accelerate normally.

If you need more info than that, let me know and I can explain more.

I'm just glad that it is getting fixed more than anything. So if I do sell or trade, I don't have that hanging over my head.

I should know by late next week as they said it would mostly likely be between 2-4 days depending on if they had to actually go inside the tranny or not. I'll ressurect the thread then.

Car is at the dealer now.

Said something about replacing the pressue silonoid. Need to find more details when I pick up my rental tonight though.

They didn't start looking at it in the morning like they were supposed to. When I called at 3:00 today, they had just started looking at it (sure.....) 45 min later, I got a call with the info and that I could pick up my rental tonight.

More info later.

im glad to hear your problem is being taken care of by the almost expired warranty...what if just 5k miles more you have another problem with the transmission...then what? would you then have to dish out the money to get that new or reoccurring issue fixed? or do u get like a 1 yr warranty on work previous work performed?

The rental is terrible. A Saturn SL2 with 9K miles and it feels like it's been beat into the ground. I'll only have it a day so nothing too bad will happen to it. Probably just drive it back when my car is ready, most likely not worth the 12.99 I had to pay for insurance for the day on it.

I will have to ask about warranty on these parts. If it's new, it should have a 12 month, 12K mile warranty on it, if not, something like 90 day. I will find all that out tomorrow when I pick it up.

Just found out while they were working on the tranny, the alignment was knocked out. And, apparently they do not have a machine at the dealer so they send the car out.
At least this one is covered by the dealer, and not me.
So, net result is, they still have my car, replaced the Pressure Control Silonoid and I have a crappy rental for another day.

Actually Bob The Parts that are replaced under factory warranty come of warranty when the Warranty runs out . No If it fails with in a year or 12000km They will just probable replace it. other words no warranty after warranty runs out

well...after noticing the gas petal shakiness and real delayed shifts, i decided to take her in this morning. i also asked if i could drive with the mechanic and the tranny guy. they both noticed what i was talkin about. they said my tranny was slipping, misfiring, and shuttering. so....i have an appointment monday, and depending on the whats the actual problem, could take anywhere from 2 hrs-5 days. Oh well, im under warranty as well, and im glad they knew what the problem was. also forgot to mention, it didnt through any codes up either.

P.S. You guys should of seen the smile on my face when both of the techs noticed what was wrong. everytime i have a prob and go to the dealership, it never happens to the techs. this time it did.

'03 is kill the tranny year

I've never been kind to my tranny (routinely downshift instead of braking, downshift from D to 3 while accelerating at 80+mph, etc., etc.) and she's still good after almost 4 years. Damn. Oh well. Extended warranty is up in 2004 and I WILL get a rebuild for $100. Oh yes I will.

My rental was a Saturn SL2 as stated above. Wasn't all that much fun, but it got me to and from work.

Car is back in my garage, and only had $500 worth of work....I'm pretty dissapointed about that really. I was looking forward to signing the warranty form that read $2000. Oh well. I only got one or two chances to recreate the shuddering on the way home last night because it was wet out here. I could not reproduce it right off the bat so I'm guessing that is a good thing.

For now, this chapter is closed, everything seems back to normal.

Oh, but when I picked up my car there was a half eaten bag of popcorn on the passenger seat.....what's up with that?
