Gas Smell..

My Girlfriend is having a Problem with her 2000 Grand am. There is a Gas Smell when she is driving around. Sometimes it is worse than other times. She had the Fuel Pressure regulator replaced a little over a year ago for the same problem. I have looked at the Regulator and do not see any Gas leaking from it, Any other ideas what could be causing this??

Something as simple as this wouldnt produce a code in your PCM. You may need to tell her to stop topping off the fuel tank. The tank is designed to have at least 10% room left after fueling up. It needs to vent once the pressure inside exceeds the tank limits. In that case it vents to a charcoal storage canister. Then evaporated back into our intake system. If there is too much vapor or gas in the storage canister it will purge it self. If you top off all the time it will vent the extra fuel into that canister when the pressure exceeds it's limits. It will eventually go away if you stop. Also you may want to check her neoprene fuel lines and see if any are leaking while under pressure.

Check the fuel rail and the oposite end of the fuel rail, where there is nipple for a fuel guage. it could be leaking through there. The other thing would be the regulator o-ring,, but you would see gas coming out of it easliy, so i doubt thats it. Mines did it when i was driving and fusing the ac, came in thourhg the vents, but it was the fuel guage i had hooked up, it was leaking fuel on the belt side where it was hooked up, but you probably don't have that either, but that side anyways just to make sure.

I'm gonna bring this back up being that my car is starting to do it now. Its been going on for the past week. It only does it at start up and then about 5 minutes later stops. A buddy of mine told me to replace the fuel filter because it may be getting clogged, but don't have the cash to do that. Oh yeah, where is the fuel regulator located so I can check that. i'm kinda dumb when it comes to pontiacs.

i have the same problem. it doesn't even seem like it does it in the summer months. i have changed my fuel filter so that shouldn't be my problem.

it is amost not likely a leak in the evap system, since due to the new epa regs, there cant be a hole of .020" in diameter, or about the side of a thumb tack tip. the evap is checked i think at startup it is pressureized to make sure and if there was a leak then the ses light would come on.

the FPR would be my first guess, but seeing as how you've already checked that i have no idea. the o-ring on mine is leaking, and the smell really sucks. i'm too lazy to change it right now though, and since i don't see any real decrease in gas mileage, or feel the suffering from dead brain cells, i'm good to go... at least until the wife starts complaining about it.

Well since you recently just did work to the rear of the car that is the first place to look. I would make sure that you did not pinch or cut any of the evap lines and that they are all connected. Besides letting it idle and checking under the car for any actual fuel leaks or runs, the best way is to get it back up in the air and check it all out again. Sometimes a connection that is not properly seated will cause a problem also.
