Clunk in steering
I have the same problem with my GA. I bought the car used and the dealer told me it was normal. I believed them until a member of this board told me he had his problem fixed under warrenty. Click on the URL for a scan of the dealer invoice
http://www3.nf.sympatico.ca/steveh/gear.jpg Your car should be still under warrenty, if they fix the problem let us know. Good luck

Well i just found out last night that i think my power steering cap seal is not very good. Its leaking the fluid out the top ever so slightly. Its going in the shop next week to get looked at. I wonder if its low on power steering fluid, maybe thats why its clunking.
Ill see Michael |

The PS on alot of GA's spill slightly out of the gap, I have also been told that this is normal in some conditions.

power steering replace
I was quoted at somewhere around $200.00 for a power steering pump replacement. BUT that wasn't a GM dealership and they wanted to use a lifetime warranty pump that runs like $140 or so. I searched online and found power steering pumps for around $70 - $75. I guess it depends on whether you have a place like I do where you can walk in with the part and just get charged labor or not. I have a buddy who says we could do it ourselves but you have to remove the serpentine belt to remove the old pump(not alot of fun from what he said). The Haynes maual does give a stepped description though.

Yeah that was my invoice. I started hearing a clunk eveery time I turned the wheel. So I called the dealer and got the car in asap and they replaced the "Stearing Gear" and its been perfect ever since.

Removing the serp belt is super easy. Just use a rachet and stick it in the square hole in the tensioner. Then push towards the rear of the car. That will loosen the tension so you can get it off. If you have a hollow metal pole to slip over the rachet for leverage it makes it so unbelievably easy that a kid could do it. Note this will get it off the pulleys so you can do your work. To remove the whole belt to replace it, you have to unmount your engine. Also real easy, but you won't have to do it in this case.

My car makes a noise (kinda of like a grinding/whirling sound) around the accessory rubber drive belt area (maybe near the power steering area), when it is cold started & the temps outside are cold but is gone when I finish driving (when the engine is warmed-up).
(When I use the block heater on timer overnight the noise is not there/minimized compared to when not plugging it in) So I was just out checking my power steering fluid level. It ok, at the correct cold level mark. The fluid is kind of thick (it is kinda of cold outside right now)I'm just wondering: When it is extremely cold outside & you cold start the car, is the power steering pump starved for fluid...could that be the noise I hear? If so, I guess it would be good idea to 'warm-up' the car for a few minutes before driving -> to save the power steering pump's life a little. Tomorrow morning it is suppose to be like -20C/-4F ![]() (I know that is warm for you guys out in the praires Canada, but that is cold enough for me here.) i think im correct when i say this but when any oil is cold it gets thicker...hence causing it to whine...and the warmer it gets the more fluid it becomes...thats y it becomes less noticable when ur car is all warmed up

Today was beautiful, so I took the time to rip the cone filter off my APOC setup and clean it. Unscrewed the left fender liner at the bottom, pulled the driver side light out, and took the shroud off the car. When I put everything back on and started the car, the hood was still up, and I happened to turn the wheel. When I did, the power steering would make a loud sucking sound as soon as it started to move, and then quiet down the rest of the time, then when I'd start to move the wheel again, it'd gasp, and then be quiet. It was REALLY loud too. It was coming from the power steering fluid area, somewhere around the tank. The system seems to be working, but why is it gasping? It sounds like a 90 year old with a pack a day habit trying to run a mile. Any thoughts?

Is the cap on, or screwed down all the way? It almost sounds like it's sucking in air, but I'm no expert when it comes to this so I may be wrong. I'd check to make sure you have the cap on all the way and make sure it has a proper seal.

I changed the oil on my 3.4 V6, 01GAGT. I noticed that the power steering fluid was leaking from the reservoir and down below on the wheel. It has been overflowing since I got it, but could my pump be going on me? The car steers fine, and does not make any noises when turning.
Just wondering if I should bring it in before warranty expires. Thanks all. ![]() |

DEFINITELY take it in. Your reservoir should not be leaking, overflowing, empty, etc. If it's dripping now and it's still under warranty, take it in ASAP. If you don't, the problem will eventually get worse. Leaks are bad in any system of your car, eventually it will cost you money. Let GM foot the bill now than you paying for it in a year or so. If it would happen to be the rack or pump I would imagine they are not cheap. The rack for the GP's is over $1,200 until you get it removed and replaced. Good luck.

Groaning Under Hard Left Turns
Hey everyone,
Im getting a pronounced groan when I turn my car left. No noise whatsoever under right turns. My first thought was power steering, which It sounds like, but then why would the noise only be heard under left turns? Thanks for any suggestions/tips/experiences. -Dave

Hopefully it isn't like my friend's '98 Sunfire GT that was recalled in the news...which the dealer doesn't know what to do about it yet.
It makes a funny noise sometimes during left turns ![]() BUT NON of the GA's were in the recall. http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/recal...p?recno=10411& http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=3922 Maybe, check the power steering fluid level. Last edited by Mike Jung; 03-26-2003 at 03:05 PM. |
