Dude, I have the same exact problem on my 99gt only mine is with right turns and nothing with left turns. It has been that way for at least 2 years and seems to be worse in cold weather. Since the car has been making that noise I've had the power steering assembly replaced due to non related problems and as well the power steering lines under the car replace due to another problem but the noise has never gone away. I just figure F---k it

I have a noise on left turns too. I talked to a very nowledgable mechanic I know who strictly works on fronts ends. He didn't physically check my car, but he went through a check list and said it's most likely the tire making noise.

I've got a groan in my steering as well..

According to the dealer, I've got a torn boot on the rack-n-pinion, so that has to be replaced, as well as "excessive play" in the tie rod end... all told, it's a $1100 job.

And that's on top of the 4th set of brakes on my 2000 SE2 (Sure, it has 72000 miles, but still.... 4 sets in 2 1/2 years?)

And of course, all of THAT is on top of the infamous lower intake manifold leak...

.... In addition to the leaky timing chain cover gasket.

And of course, the busted tie rod end is causing my alignment to be off, so the tires are wearing unevenly ..... tack on another $450 to that.

And this doesn't mention the problems I had while the car WAS under warranty, like the busted power steering pump, or the pulsing-brake syndrome, or the tire-scrunching noise, or the busted blinkers, or the blown HVAC resistor ........

This car is SERIOUSLY p_____g me off!

I love my GA, really I do, but NONE of this stuff should be failing at 70,000 miles!

Christ. That's some list of stuff. I think I'm going to scan in all my receipts and put up a pontiacproblems.com website ...

One mechanic said my tires just needed to be filled... POOF no more squeeling and squeeking when turning for me.

If this doesn't work...it could be p steering fluid is low.

Suggestion - don't turn the wheel ALL the way over till it stops. That's a bad thing!

A remanned one will cost you under $100. A brand new one will cost you around 4 bills....stick with the remanned. LoL I have one on my car and it's been about 2K-3K miles so far and it works just fine...

I've had mine replaced twice (under warranty) and each time they were new. Last time I got it replaced, it was out of warranty, so I opted for the used one. This one seems to work just fine.

So would that mean you have a muscle car now?

Power Steering Fluid Check

I read the owners manual, and it says you really should not have to check this, and if it does get low, that you should have it checked out.

The Haynes manual says to check it every 3K, and that it you have to add a little here and there, it is no big deal... basically normal (at least that is how I took it to mean).

Anyway, I checked mine this morning (29K on the car), and it is low enough that the dipstick does not come into contact at all with the fluid. I can see fluid in the resoviour, and from looking at it, I figure that it is close to at least touching though. BTW, the car was cold (had sat overnight. Temp outside was around 45-50.)

Is this cause for concern as the manual suggests? Or normal as the Haynes manual suggests? At this point, I plan to add some, then keep an eye on it until just before the warrantee expires on the car.

Thanks

Unless you have a leak somewhere, it should never get low. How many miles do you have on it? I would bring it in and them test the thing to make sure you dont have any leaks, just in case.

Checking the fluid every 3000 miles is a little extreme. I would probably check it once a year or so just to see if I have any leaks.

Last night... 28,950 miles.

Car is just about 2 years old. (I think I have the date in my sig).

I'll call the dealer to see what they say about it.

Haynes Manual says...

"The Power Steering system relies on fuid that may, over a period of time, require replentishing"

and

"If the reservoir requires frequent fluid additions, all power steering hoses, hose connections, the power steering pump and the rack and pinion assembly should be carefully checked for leaks."

What are the odds that it was always low... from the day I bought it?

This is the first time I have checked it.
