I don't know, higher performance bulbs are a lot brighter than LEDs unless you're planning on spending $10 for a single LED.

What kind of high performance bulbs do you speak of?

JRYAN34 is infamous around these parts, but not in a good way
superlumination.com

Best site by far. I have ordered from them several times with no problems. The products are highly quality and last forever. They also ship quick. Hope this helps ya out.

Well I my courtesy lights and mirror lights are Polarg. I also bought the WLEDx5 194's off superbrightleds.com and the Polarg ones are definitely brighter. They just don't have the benefits of being less resistant to breaking, and obviously they produce heat and won't last nearly as long as an LED.

I bought my switchback LEDs from superlumination/autolumination (I think the're the same place).. and the're awesome.. I was gonna buy everything else there too, but superbrightleds.com sells the exact same stuff for less.. and they give u the specs, like light output and color.

Incandescent bulbs do appear brighter because they emit light in all directions, whereas a single LED is directional. If u buy one of those multi-led towers that send light 360 degrees, then the LEDs would be brighter.. The're more expensive, but they look really good and you will most likely never need to replace them.
