Rack and Pinion Mount Problems

So a few days ago when I was backing out of a parking spot, I heard a lound pop like I ran something over. I stopped and checked if anything was there but there wasn't. When I was driving home I had to have the steering wheel turned about 25 degrees or more to keep the car moving straight forward. When I got home I took the wheels off and looked around for anything and found that the steering rack mount was all rusted and shotty to the point that it broke apart. The steering rack mount is made of crappy thin steel that is welded directly to the front subframe (or engine cradle).

The rest of the subframe is in pretty good looking condition even though I live in a state that uses salt all winter. There is a big flat piece of steel that is part of the steering rack mount and is the only rusted part on the front subframe. This sucks because I have to replace the whole subframe. Has anybody else had this problem?

If the sub-frame is solid or you can attach to a solid point, can a new mount be made and welded onto the sub-frame? Of anyway to bolt a new mount onto the sub-frame? If the original is welded on then I would just fabricate a new one and weld it on. If the part of the sub-frame it is welded to, is rusted out itself then may have to reinforce that part of the sub-frame.

Of course this all depends on what is in the way, what needs removed, what you can get to etc.... I have never messed with that area of my GA other than replacing the left inner tie-rod end when I first purchased the car, so I don't recall how it was all setup in the area at the moment.

Where in Ohio are you located?

I would be worried about hurting someone else who may be driving their kids home from practice or something. I hope he did like 3 MPH all the way home.

Swapping out the subframe is not too bad. You can weld on a fabricated bracket or may be able to bolt on a bracket but there is not much room down there. Good luck, a girl on GAOC payed out the a$$ to have this done.

Yeah, it shouldn't be that hard. Need to support the engine/trans from the top, then you can disconnect the suspension arms, front and rear trans mounts, ABS module, etc and drop the sub-frame down with the steering rack attached. If the sub-frame really is in decent enough shape, then I would think a good shop would be able to fabricate a bracket out of some steel plate and weld it to the sub-frame in the original location after cutting off the old one and cleaning up the metal. Otherwise you'll have to replace the whole thing. Which option will be more expensive depends on how much the shop would charge in labor for the fabrication work. You'll probably want to call a few places and ask them if they can even do it first, then how much they'd charge.

I sent him an email and never got a response. I was trying to find out where in Ohio he is. If he was close I was going to offer some help if he has the tools and a place to work on it. I would do it for him but for some sort of fee if I did it here.

But until I get a bigger building I am out of garage room for a vehicle. I can do fabrication work in the garage but with all of my tools I need a bigger garage and am stuck doing most car work in the driveway (but weather doesn't stop me, used to working out in it anyway, I have a portable tent thingy- but rarely ever get it out).

Speaking of tools, just got a small metal lathe delivered the other day (well a new replacement lathe because UPS Freight damaged the first 2 that I was sent), cant wait to use it! Ordering a small mill in about 2 weeks to go with it, then a new plasma cutter so I can build a CNC plasma table, then.............. for me and tools........it never ends I guess.
